Hunter Profession in World Behind the Veil | World Anvil

Hunter

The hunter is tasked with the tracking and neutralizing of supernatural threats against humans. Over the centuries, their exact roles and status within civilization have changed many times, but they always brought out strong emotions. Due to the nature of their work, most supernatural, mistrust hunters in general and will only interact with them if absolutely necessary. Many have a deep-seated hatred for them, as they lost loved ones or friends to hunters.   In general, the profession has an excellent image in the eye of the human public. This has helped the guild to maintain their operations and keep up recruitment.

Training

The path to becoming a hunter is long and difficult. A hunter has to go through four years of study and training at an accredited guild academy. Once a prospective hunter has graduated from the academy, they are officially initiated into the guild. This makes them a trainee under a master hunter. The duration as trainee differs between individual hunters, but usually takes two or three years.   Once the trainee program has been successfully completed, they become a hunter.

Ranks, Positions & Specializations

A licenced hunter has a number of career opportunities.

  • Guildmaster. The leader of the hunter's guild.
  • Specialist. This rank is assigned to hunters who have a special ability through their blessing or specialize in the hunt of a very specific prey. In both cases, this rank has to be earned by showing mastery.
  • Researcher. A hunter who is rarely in the field, but instead supports a team or division with information on what they are hunting.

Non-Guild Hunters
Some hunters leave the guild and work on their own. Although it is not really legal, these hunters are rarely prosecuted. Unless they commit a serious crime to varant intervention.   These hunters often work as mercenaries for the highest bidders. Often they end up on one side in a conflict between two supernatural factions.

I can see why Hunters might not be the most popular people amongst the supernatural community. I love all the different ranks/roles and their jobs. I also like the bit about non-guild hunters... I don't know why it didn't occur to me that that would be a thing before.

Thank you, Emy! The non-Guild hunters are a product of the red-tape a global organization like the Hunter's Guild requires to run smoothly. Most hunters who leave are disagree with policy choices of the guild.

Interesting profession! I like the inclusion of non-guild hunters, though I'm quite curious about how one goes to join a guild. Are these kept hidden or secret? Does the guild reach out to you or do you have to apply? Are there many different schools of thoughts on the duties of a hunter?

Actually, there is just one guild at the moment. I still have to write that article though :P   But within that vast guild there are many different factions who have very different ideas on what a hunter should and should not do.
