Prophecy of Extinction

In times of old the mighty fall.
In times yet come, the end of all.
It matters not what would or will,
for afterwards, there not but chill.
— Prophecy of Extinction, First Verse

Summary

When the prophecy was first foretold, many were not concerned: "Everyone dies eventually;" went the logic, "that's why we bare children." After much study, however, interpretations increasingly began agreeing that such death was not the normal circle of life, but death on scales so massive that there would be no dragons left to reproduce. Once this knowledge was in the public consciousness, dragonkind began to worry, prompting more study of the prophecy, which only pulled the unsavory details into sharper focus.

Historical Basis

With intensive study of the prophecy, it was noted that the description not only matched many of the mass extinction events of the past, but also that the prophecy itself claimed such destruction to be cyclical in nature.

Spread

Once it was determined that such an end had happened multiple times in the past, it was obvious that dragons, specifically, falling to another could be avoided; as such, knowledge of the prophecy was disseminated throughout dragon societies so that the collective motivation could be turned into a communal effort great enough to preserve dragonkind through every cycle to come.

Cultural Reception

Dragons, with their strong sense of self-preservation, were quick to band together on a project large enough to protect from mass extinction. The building of an underground ecumonopolis was but the first step, with ancillary projects to help maintain or transfer essentials into this new life underground.

In Literature

Prophecies are inherently magical things, so much so that they are their own record of themselves. This made it an initially controversial decision to bind the Prophecy of Extinction to the Grand Archive Access, as it would become ever-present in the collective unconscious of Dragonkind. Most dragons are thankful, however, as it has given the motivation needed to remain ever-vigilant against the threat it foretells.
