Episode 78: The Adventurers Are In Check

Previously...

Arriving at Kingsfall and after having helped lessen the threat of Neffs planned attack on the city, the Wayfinders found themselves receiving attention not only from the Council but from the shadows. Receiving intel from a cloak and dagger intelligence operation run by Madame Bondasil, the party learns not only more about the Rasa general they had faced but also secrets about themselves they're not ready to confront.   Knighted by the city and awaiting the days until the warning Neffs gave, the party found themselves each wrapped up in revelations, trouble, secrets, and the arcane, but they needed to find a path forward through all of this and aiding the city seemed to be the right thing to do.

General Summary

Deciding to follow up on Grollo's suggestion to help prevent a divined attack on a southern town, the Wayfinders along with the Fatherless Sons met up with the Thunderbeaks who had also volunteered to set a trap for the invading Rasa along with some city militia led by a Kingsfall Guard cleric by the name of Jasper. After Reylan spent some time casting Divination and learning of possible outcomes, the group prepared for the conflict ahead though were warned by the seer Frostroot, that it had been him who gave details of his vision to the Council and had seen the town on fire with the townspeople dead along with Reylan.   As the night continued on, the dwarven leader of the Thunderbeaks, Dolph Thunderbeak, drank amongst the other parties bringing up how fearless the others seemed while noting the fear in his men though he blamed it due to their lack of sleep. While everyone tried to bolster each other's confidence for the fight ahead and enjoy what little time they had left, the Wayfinders along with Gheston and some militia men found themselves taking extra precautions and preparing defenses along the route to be taken towards them.   The small downtime ended early allowing some of the spellcasters to catch some rest and as the night wore on and everyone took their watches, a feeling of unease settled amongst the groups. In the darkest of the night before the dawn, a bright green flash alerted those on watch and Dolph took to the skies on his mount to scout ahead. Returning, he tried to call out to the others that there were large beasts headed their way but before he could land, a lightning bolt streaked across the sky and struck both him and his mount, sending him crashing into the defenses and barely hanging on though his mount was a tangle of limbs and wings.   Once the forces were in sight, the groups were witness to huge Rasa beasts carrying the smaller and more familiar reaver versions of themselves on their back along with trollkin reavers moving in small groups. However, while they had previously known the number of enemies set to attack, they could not see all of the forces and thus hadn't been able to see that there were only twenty-five enemies not thirty as had been divined. As soon as the parties began to scatter and spread out to cover more ground, Frostroot's eyes turned an eerie red similar to something that only Tetran and Plum had seen before and at a signal, the remaining members of the Thunderbeaks turned on everyone else.   The militia's healer was struck down in an instant. Jasper was stabbed twice by one of the Thunderbeaks as another tried to take down a soldier at a ballista. Plum found himself struck and Reylan felt her mind nearly get rended and torn as Frostroot attempted to spell her. Realizing the betrayal, the remaining adventurers and soldiers found themselves split between fighting off the force coming toward them and the experienced adventurers trying to cut them down.   After a bloody and brutal battle, one which saw Dolph Thunderbeak dance between life and death and Tetran embracing his rage to enter the fray-- the skirmish ended with the reavers were slaughtered, the trollkin burned, and the shaman killed. With a couple soldiers felled but the main bulk of the adventurers surviving, the group went to work retrieving bodies to be brought back to the city. Meanwhile, Reylan contacted Ellana with the revelation of the trap only to learn that the adventurer's guild and grain mills were attacked and set on fire at the same time. This was all but a warning of things to come.
