It is us who remember what has been lost to others, and it is us who ensure it is not lost to time.
There is a strange order that lives in the Wastes, residing in a city surrounded by nothing and yet everything that one dare not wish to encounter. The people that keep the unseen forces at bay are known as the Speakers of Time and they come and go through the city by arcane means but never venture beyond the walls of the city which stand at nearly seventy feet high.
What is Known
In all texts about the Wastes, there is always mention whether small or significant- depending on the tome that's picked up- of a keeper of a secret locked in time. In some passages, this is expanded on and explained to the best of the author's abilities, but like most things in regard to an ancient past most everything is muddled to the point where it is unknown whether or not the Speakers of Time still exist or were something lost to what they dedicated to keep alive-- the knowledge of time before all was written.
There are accounts from those that pass through the Wastes who see the mirage of a large spire that looks like it's piercing the sky and a large fortress city built around its base with winds moving oddly around it and shifting the sand around forming silhouettes of familiar and horrible creatures in the air. However, they say that it's just a mirage for there's no reason for there to be an invisible dragon circling a city in the middle of nowhere.
History
The truth of the matter is known by very few groups and mostly by those who are believed to be a myth themselves. However, they do know the truth and they do know that the Speakers are alive and well transmitting as much as they can to who they can.
More teacher and historian than oracles and preachers of a time now relegated to legend, the Speakers pass on what they know and what they have been learning from within their city hoping to disseminate what they've found in order to find someone that may have knowledge of exactly what they have discovered.
It's from the Speakers of Time that many prophecies have come to be known and how many myths have been recounted to the people.
The City Kept by Time
While there are regular citizens who choose to live within the fortress city, most citizens of the city have an occupation and a specialization within the order dedicated to maintaining both its safety and its monitoring of the Time Spire.
For those who wish to become a member of the order, they must first see a call on the Spire and bring it to the head of that sect. Through divination magics a new prophecy is unconvered and from there the new member is inducted and taught how to be a Keeper of Time.
