Runes
Runes
Runes are thought to be a form of writing that uses a symbol set to focus the mana around it. While some think this is an inherent property of the characters or images, the truth is that they exhibit this behavior because of their psychoreactive nature. While this property was exhibited in many worlds in the material realm, it was always with different symbols, different materials and different results.
Runes can be crafted from a variety of materials, but most are made from, or carved into, metal or crystal. This is in part because of the material properties of the medium which can be enhanced or even altered by runes. Runes are a staple of magical crafting, and are often found on weapons, armor, and other objects that are highly prized and covetted by wielders.
History
Runes have been used since time immemorial as a language for focusing mana to produce many wonders. This, in large part, is due to the fact that they are symbols that are dense with information, backed by the focused intention of the creator, and supported by all of the mental certainty of other people that use that language. Mana responds to focused thought, and very few things crystalize thought as well as symbols and words. It should come as no surprise then, that when the Fulmin arrived on Duende a runic language as their common spoken language, that mana responded quite strongly to it.
The concept of augmenting objects with runes really helped shape life on Duende, allowing skilled wielders to create magical objects of remarkable utility and versatility. Among the more common are things like water vessels that nullify contaminants stored in them, fortifying weapons and equipment against wear and tear, and augmenting objects to be more effective that their purpose.
