Life
Born in the Fall of 291 AG, Padma spent her childhood with her parents and her fraternal twin sister, Pallas, in the Western Air Temple. Since her father was a citizen of the Fire Nation, he frequently took her and Pallas to trips to different locations in the Fire Nation to let them explore. They often played hide-and-seek around the towns each time they visited with their father. At a young age, she discovered her ability to airbend, but was uninterested in bending. Instead, Padma and Pallas spent their days running off to the library to learn how to read with their role model, Lhili. Their love of reading grew as they read more books in the library. When Padma was only five years old, her beloved father had abandoned his family to have a new life at the Fire Nation. He had been having an affair for the past year and had a child with his new partner. Padma’s mother had disappeared shortly after, leaving no clue to where she had gone. The twins had no knowledge of the whereabouts of both of their parents.
Alone, they continued to visit the Western Air Temple’s Library with Lhili so she can support them throughout the way. Growing up, Padma spent most of her time farming in the Western Air Temple’s farm and took care of the animals there. She met many new friends, including Jinpa, Avia, and Astra. One day while reading a book, Lhili excitedly ran up to Padma to tell her about the new Keeper branch. Showing her keeper necklace made from lapis, she explained that she had become a Keeper to continue her goal of being accepted as a Watcher. It was at this moment when Padma knew what path she wanted to follow through, and she quickly researched documents and articles to immerse herself in her work. After what seemed like an eternity, Padma became a keeper when she had reached the age of 16. Both Padma and Pallas were accepted into the Keeper branch at the same time. Eager, they both rejoiced and began to work on keeper-related projects, such as classes.
Subsequently after receiving the keeper rank, Pallas left the Western Air Temple to move to the Eastern Air Temple. Padma had contemplated whether to move to Eastern with Pallas or not, but she decided to remain at the Western Air Temple, where she grew up. She couldn’t bear leaving her friends and starting anew. And so she continued her life without Pallas by her side all the time, farming and writing. Although Padma was surrounded by people around her, she felt lonelier than ever and became frustrated with her life. She began to feel enraged with her parents for abandoning her and blamed herself for being the cause of their split. For weeks she avoided any contact with friends and stopped writing letters to Pallas. Barely eating and sleeping, Padma was exhausted and questioned her life choices. She had recently received a letter from Pallas saying that she had been worried sick and asked her to visit the Eastern Air Temple to catch up. She reluctantly agreed and flew to Eastern to meet with her sister. Being there with her sister alleviated her pain she had felt the past few weeks.
While exploring the temple, she and Pallas encountered a peculiar airbender walking around. She introduced herself as Rylo, and told them she was new. They both asked her where she had come from, and Rylo explained to them that she was originally from the Fire Nation. They continued to talk about their pasts until Pallas asked her if she knew her father, and described him to her. Padma was against the idea of revealing Rylo about their father, but she too was curious about his whereabouts. By then, Rylo had gasped and questioned them about their father’s name. When Pallas told her the name of their father, tears formed in Rylo’s eyes as she informed them that their fathers were one and the same. The twins were overjoyed to discover this and embraced Rylo with welcoming hands.
Returning back to the Western Air Temple, Padma was greeted by the familiar faces of her friends. She apologized to them about the way she acted before her trip to the Eastern Air Temple, and promised she would always reach out to them if she needed support. Though she dearly loved her home temple, she felt like she could not grow there. A new temple could perhaps give her a fresh start, away from her past. Since she did not have many belongings, it took her a short amount of time to pack up. Before she left, she lingered in her old room, where she had stayed for her whole life. She took a deep breath and walked to the field above the Western Air Temple, where she would depart for the Northern Air Temple. After learning the history of the temple, Padma had decided to settle there, away from all her friends and family.
When she had arrived, she was immediately welcomed by Samten, who was the Elder of the Northern Air Temple at the time. She immediately unpacked everything into her new room, located in the Cave Rooms. The room was much smaller than her old room at Western, but she found it quite cozy inside. Walking around, she had met Isa, who quickly became her new friend. Isa showed her around the temple and excitedly showed Padma her favorite places. Isa was also a keeper, so the both became close friends almost immediately. While assisting Isa on constructing a new spot for the temple, she came across an Air Nomad named Tal. He too came from the Western Air Temple and moved to the Northern Air Temple for new opportunities. The two bonded while exploring the temple together and always caused mischief when around each other. Because they both lived in the Cave Rooms, they often referred to themselves as “Cavemen.” Padma soon started constructing a build herself, in a tower that would soon be called “Div’s Public Library.” She spent tireless weeks filling up bookshelves and adding furniture to each floor of the tower. Making sure everything was perfect, she looked at the tower one last time before opening up to the public. At this moment, an Air Nomad walked in and introduced himself as Rai. The two briefly talked and Padma was amazed by the many accomplishments Rai had done for the temple. Walking back to her room, she knew great things will arrive for Rai in the future.
After a few months of living at Northern, Padma received a letter from Pallas that announced she would be holding an expedition to Omashu soon and asked if Padma could attend. Padma immediately replied and packed her notebook in a bag to prepare. When she had arrived with the group, they met with Queen Arusakie, who was the Omashu Queen at the time. They went inside the Omashu embassy and unpacked their items upstairs. Throughout the whole expedition, Padma and Avia could not stop talking, which allowed them to receive a scolding from a Professor. During a small picnic, two criminals, Cho and Kan, stole Air Nomad staffs as well as other belongings. The expedition group chased the two down until they were cornered. After tying the criminals up, the Queen thanked them and gave a farewell.
Returning to the Northern Air Temple, Elder Samten announced that Rai would be the Abbot for Northern. Padma was delighted when hearing the news, and knew Rai deserved it. After congratulating him, she continued her keeper-related projects and created a meditation room that would be underground. She spent months decorating the room and caring for the fish. When the work was done, she invited Astra to hold a meditation session with the whole world. It went well to Padma’s relief, and she quickly moved on to the next project she had in mind. Researching various books regarding Avatar Kyoshi’s life, she had the idea to host a class about the Camellia-Peony War with Junoa, who was an Initiate Sage at the time. The class went fairly well and Padma was excited to see what the next project was on her list.
Before she could start her next assignment, she recently heard of Tal’s death and rushed over to see what happened. There was a big wound on the side of his head, an aftermath of hitting his head on a rock. The fatal accident had led him to his death. In tears, Padma closed his eyes and buried him on a mountain, not far from the temple. Every night afterwards, Padma received nightmares and was always afraid to sleep because she did not want to face them. Isa suggested taking a small trip back to the Western Air Temple, to which Padma agreed. Packing some of her belongings, she headed back to Western. Upon arrival, Padma looked at the temple in awe. So much yet so little has changed since she left. She found a quiet spot right above the temple, on the edge of the cliff and weeped. Wiping away her tears, she heard a figure approaching right next to her and sat down. After she calmed down, the figure introduced himself as Wick. She smiled and thanked him for being there with her. The two hung out and looked around the temple together so that Padma could see the new changes since she left. When her visit had come to an end, she returned to the Northern Air Temple, feeling healed and anew.
When she came back, she heard of Rai’s promotion to Elder and Samten’s promotion to Guru. Rejoicing, she congratulated both of them and told them how proud she was. Padma continued her work and hosted another class on the 10 Stages of Genocide at the outdoor classroom. She constructed builds such as the Garden Tower and the Greenhouse, and hosted a picnic event to further bond the Air Nomads. The amount of work she has put in for the temple had made her exhausted, but she was always looking forward to doing more. Due to her lack of bending (since she spent her time worrying on projects rather than focusing on her bending), she eventually had forgotten how to airbend. This was no problem, as Padma was not interested in learning how to airbend again. Shortly after the picnic, Rai spoke to Padma and asked her if she would like to take on the responsibilities of an Abbess and work with him to improve the temple even more. Padma gleefully accepted and was excited to tell her twin sister. The next morning, she visited the greenhouse and met with Pallas. The two embraced each other with watery eyes. She hadn’t had the chance to congratulate Pallas on her promotion to Watcher yet. Padma was so proud of her sister, and knew she would do great things for the future.
It has been a few weeks as Abbess, and Padma is still adjusting to all the new responsibilities she has to take on. However, with her close friends and Pallas supporting her, she is sure that anything can be accomplished. Her goal as Abbess is to bring more appreciation to the temple itself, and she hopes this can be done during her time.
