Triton

Stalwart champions and self-proclaimed guardians of the seas, the triton are a proud people if not arrogant in nature. To see them on the surface is a rare sight and many are perturbed by their mannerisms and sense of self-importance.

World of Seas

Originating from the Elemental Plane of Water, the tritons were facing near extinction from their natural predators. During the Divine Wars, there was a cosmic breach of elemental energy from the god, Xerbo, causing many inhabitants of the Plane of Water to escape to the material plane. This allowed the aquatic people to establish new, relatively safer roots on the Material Plane but also allowed for many abhorrent underwater creatures such as sahuagin, krakens, and even worse foes such as aboleths to make their way onto Oryth as well.

Aquatic Emissaries

Due to their affinity with the aquatic world, all triton have a rudimentary understanding of the beasts of the sea and can communicate with any creature that breathes water.

Aquamancy

From their ancestry that came from the Element Plane of Water, they have gained a mystical ability to affect the water of the Material Plane and resistance to the freezing cool depths of the oceans, allowing them to populate areas normally uninhabited by humanoid creatures. Some say this is an almost empathic relationship that the children of the sea were bestowed by Xerbo himself.

A triton who has honed this ability is able to conjure walls of water and even novices of this art are able to conjure fog or create gusts of wind by control the ambient water in the air around them.

Stoic Warriors

Though many see the tritons as arrogant and haughty, they are noble and good at heart. They often pursue righteous deeds, assisting those in need and questing on selfless adventures in order to help strangers they encounter. Though they are quick to sing their own praise, their actions speak far louder than their words. Though it takes many people a while to grow accustomed to their attitudes, after acclimation, they are often welcomed with open arms.

The Dry World

Most tritons never ascend to the surface world and find the thought of not having the freedom of verticle movement a good enough reason to never attempt it. However, some tritons take the leap onto the land of Oryth to explore what the cultures have to offer and bring back the tales of their exploits home to their people. Some triton become so accustomed to the surface and the gawking eyes given from people unfamiliar with their kind, that they take up roots and settle down on the dry land.

Most triton names have two or three syllables. Masculine names typically end with a vowel and the letter s, and feminine names traditionally end with an n. Tritons use their home protectorate as a surname, with the name formed by adding a vowel followed by a “th” to the end of the protectorate’s name.
