Varsel Peaks

A volcanically active mountain range in Zendu where floating islands rise from the ashes.

Overview

Bordering the picturesque plains of the Zendu field rises the indomitable peaks of the Varsel mountain range. This actively volcanic region grumbles away in the distance, occasionally venting small plumes of ash and pouring rivers of molten lava from its craters.   The ash-dusted foothills contain many brightly coloured acid lakes that, by their colour, look invitingly tropical. Thankfully the pungent smell of sulphur is enough to keep the majority of creatures safely away.

Rising islands

Over thousands of years, the volcanic activity in the Varsel range has formed the perfect conditions for albar to form. This unique igneous rock has trapped gasses within its structure that cause massive formations of it to slowly rise to the surface.   When the gasses become agitated with heat, the rocks begin to float and eventually break free from the ground to form floating islands that soon drift away on hot plumes of air. The islands range in size from large boulders to colossal formations.   Many of the floating islands are blown back into the mountain range, causing frequent landslides and rockfalls, and others sink back gently to the ground when they reach colder air streams.

Albar mining

Albar miners flock to the region during the colder months to gather this lightweight material for the market, especially the large rocks which are saved for using as airship cores and cargo counterweights.
It takes a lot of skill and careful engineering to survey the right kind of rocks to harvest. If you don't have strong enough or secure enough chains to anchor it, your goods will fly up and away before you know it! And don't you dare let anyone try and hold on to bring it back down!

Just imagining some poor guy holding onto a rock as it floats away. XD   I love the visual of the colourful acid lakes. Beautiful but deadly.

It's like when you fly a kite when you're little and the wind gets a bit too strong xD

I love this mechanism for floating island and the how albar work so much!!! It's super cool and sounds so reasonable XD And I love how you've explored the consequence of floating islands with the migratory bird nest carrying diseases!
