An annual event held in Elryn. The date is never set in stone; typically, it depends on when exactly a venue is available. Each year, the Festival of Feasts is held in a different location. Though it has always been held inside of Elryn’s borders.
Rotating Venues
Each year, the Elryn Society of Food Connoisseurs holds a bidding contest for the Festival of Feasts. Whoever wins the bid will be granted permission to host the festival in the next year.
In order to place a bid with the Elryn Society of Food Connoisseurs, the bidding organisation must be able to:
- Place a deposit of 100 Dervuin
- Provide ample security across all days of the festival
- Provide a large enough venue to support a variety of stalls and staging areas
If they are capable of the above then they are placed into the biddings. At the start of the year, an organisation has two months to get all of their paperwork in order and place their initial deposit for the festival with the Elryn Society of Food Connoisseurs.
After this, successful applications enter the bidding period. This lasts for three months. The Elryn Society of Food Connoisseurs keep all bidding organisations up to date with the current highest bid. An organisation may drop out of the running any time and will be given their deposit back. At the end of these three months, the Elryn Society of Food Connoisseurs will reveal the winner of the bid (usually on a nationwide scale).
“It’s a shame,” you say, eyeing your father as he practically dances around the kitchen, “that we weren’t born in Elryn.”
“Oh,” he replies, glancing up at you briefly before returning his attention to the task at hand. You watch as he skillfully chops and dices the assortment of vegetables on the counter. Quick and perfect, as expected from the ex-head chef of Yondar’s royal family. “And why might that be, my darling daughter?”
Your father may be attempting to feign ignorance, but you catch the upward tilt of his lips. A smile to betray his thoughts.
“You would love the Festival of Feasts. In fact, I think you would end up having the most popular stall.” You smile as he guffaws.
“You give me far too much credit,” he replies after a moment, once his laughter has died down. In spite of the dismissal, he’s still smiling brightly, even as he continues to prepare the other ingredients.
Attending the Festival of Feasts
Anyone is welcome to attend the festival - after all, the idea is that of bringing multiple communities together through their love of food. Outsiders, in recent years, have been actively encouraged to attend and are offered similar discounts to families in lodgings near to the venue. This is to help broaden the variety of food and drink that comes to the festival.
Throughout the day and night, stalls are stocked with various food and drinks. Anything is accepted, from baking, roasting, frying, steaming, or smoking foods, to spirits, liquor, ale, mead, and wine. There are also non-alcoholic beverages available for children or those not partaking, such as various squeezed fruit juices or just plain water.
During the day, there are competitions held in staging areas. Some venues will even hold classes for those visiting the festival. There is also music playing throughout the day. At night, the stalls remain open, but the staging areas go from being used for food competitions to musical and theatrical events.
