Osseous Decay

I’m happy about these new technologies to help suppress my condition.

This is an uncommon congenital degenerative disease among the Merfolk from the planet of Onnesso who live on The Station. This disease is very rare on Onnesso and thus has very little medical help there. Which also leads to those with this disease leaving Onnesso for the help available on The Station…

About

This condition has existed on the planet before the merfolk had ways to record their information so only anecdotal records of where and how this condition emerged exists. People say that it was a slight from an Old God to his old followers for not following him anymore.

Symptoms

Genetic screening can be done on the merfolk embryos to identify the presence of the condition’s genes. This allows parents to make informed decisions regarding their offspring.   If a child is born with this condition they will start showing symptoms around their 4th age cycle.
  • Their bones become brittle and are prone to fractures even with minor impacts.
  • Muscle strength diminishes, making it difficult to perform everyday activities. This weakness often leads to reduced physical activity, further exacerbating the condition.
  • The fragility of bones extends to the teeth, leading to frequent dental issues such as fractures, decay, and loss of teeth.
  • As the disease progresses, chronic pain becomes a significant symptom, affecting mobility and quality of life.
  • The skin may become more fragile and prone to bruising and tearing due to the underlying bone and muscle issues.

  • Diagnosis & treatment

Usually children with this condition only lived to be around 15-20 years old instead of the average 139 for merfolk. But with recent medical advancements they can become around 30-50 years old.   Despite it not being possible to cure the condition there are several treatments to manage and relieve the symptoms.
  • Mineral supplements and medications that promote bone density and strength.
  • Regular sessions with a physical therapist help in maintaining mobility and managing pain through targeted exercises.
  • Pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods to manage chronic pain, such as pain relief medications, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy.
  • There is also a new invention used called the Osseous necklace that is worn around the necks of patients.
