Agent (Existential Risks Directorate)
Known by the simple title of Agent, the operatives of the Existential Risks Directorate are often whispered about in Starweb space, but rarely seen.
Recruitment remains shrouded in mystery as well. Many people have emerged over the years with tell-all accounts of their alleged training and operations with the XRD; most observers consider these reports to be hoaxes, perhaps subtly encouraged by the XRD to drown out any real leaks. Some speculate that most current agents have been with the Directorate since its foundation, with few recruitments.
Public encounters with XRD agents are few and far between, often raising more questions than they answer. Concerned above all with stopping existential threats, they will often turn a blind eye to lesser illegal activity and even work with groups such as organized crime gangs in order to keep the lines of communication open in case these people ever stumble into possession of something truly dangerous. When they appear in person, they often do so in mysterious ways, able to travel without leaving surveillance records of their presence, and are well-equipped with the latest black-project power armor, weapons, and guard bots.
They typically approach people such as research scientists, explorers, Hexamite space treasure hunters, and others who might devise or encounter knowledge or technological artifacts which could pose an existential threat to Starweb civilization, or some subset of it. In such meetings, they will make the limits of their tolerance clear and request cooperation if any threats should indeed be found. Failure to comply is most unwise.
Details
The job of every agent is to support the XRD's mandate to protect civilization from existential threats and ensure its continued orderly functioning. To that end it is suspected they are given wide latitude in their actions, and can get away with things that would land an ordinary citizen in a criminal rehabilitation center. Records regarding XRD agents and their activities past and present are, with few exceptions, highly secret in order to prevent information on x-threats from falling into the hands of those who would use it for evil, and to prevent public worry over potential pending threats and past ones which were corrected before catastrophe could occur.Recruitment remains shrouded in mystery as well.
