Technology which permits the manipulation of the fundamental nature of reality.

Because of this, ontotechnological devices are extremely powerful and unpredictable. Such technology is known to modern xenologists through artifacts found in the ancient ruins of past civilizations.

A fully mature ontotechnology would enable the complete rewriting of the laws of physics and the creation of new universes. Some scientists advance this as a possible "transcendence" resolution for the Fermi Paradox: alien civilizations migrate into custom-engineered universes.
