Dendar, The Night Serpent

An ancient and powerful primordial, Dendar is thought to have been created when the first mortal nightmare occurred. She devours the dreams of mortals and gods alike with a unending appetite. She is a patron for nihilistic cults who seek to bring the end of the world. She is also popular among the yuan-ti, vying with Merrshaulk and Sseth.

Appearance

Dendar is a colossal serpent who spent her time devouring the nightmares and fears of both mortals and immortals in hopes of bringing about the end of the world. She is some 300 feet long with blue-black scales, yellow eyes, and a huge maw filled with four fangs, spittle, and the bones of some of her former victims.   The Night Serpent is able to use her enormous size to crush victims below her bulk or to swallow them whole. Her forked tongue could be used to trip and entangle victims whom she could then inject with a sleep poison so she could absorb their nightmares.

History

During the Dawn War between the Gods and Primordials, it was Dendar who devoured the sun and plunged Toril into an era of icy darkness. This time is named the Shadow Epoch by scholars. This ended with the conclusion of the Dawn War, when the primordial Ubtao betrayed his brethren and trapped Dendar in a prison on the Fugue Plane. The entrance of this prison is said to be a massive set of iron doors beneath the Peaks of Flame in Chult.
