Merrshaulk

The eldest god of the serpentfolk is a truly ancient entity whose worship began in the Days of Thunder. Merrshaulk was once the patron diety of the Sarrukh, the creator race of all scalykind. After their vast empires vanished from Toril, his worship continued through the traditions of the Yuan-ti and it has continued so until the current age.   Though the Master of the Pit is not conscious, neither is he entirely dormant. Mirroring the fate of yuan-ti in the world, Merrshaulk entered a deep slumber when the serpent folk left the surface and went into hiding in ages past. It is unclear if declining worship caused him to fall asleep, or if his prolonged torpor caused his worshipers to abandon him. Even in his compromised state, Merrshaulk grants spells to his clergy in response to their invocations. Rousing him for advice or direct intervention is possible, but requires many ritual murders to be performed in his name, and his return to consciousness lasts only a short time.   The leaders of Merrshaulk’s worshipers, called pit masters, are malison warlocks that uphold and advance the age-old yuan-ti traditions. They sense that it has become easier to wake him in recent decades, and believe this to be a sign that he will soon fully awaken, shed his skin, and — renewed by transformation — restore the yuan-ti to their rightful place as masters of the mortal world.

Divine Realm

The Master of the Pit slumbers within his realm of Smaragd, the 74th layer of the Abyss. This realm is land of ever-shifting colors which is covered in vast tropical jungle. Merrshaulk sleeps within a vast set of demonic serpent infested pils and caverns. All who have found the resting chamber have never returned, for the Master of the Pit slays any who disturb his torpor.
