Ants Jaakson
Ants managed to get himself a job as a mechanic working for Fiat. This took him to Indianapolis in the United States where he worked on factory cars for the 1915 and 1916 races, He returned to Italy after the 1917 race was canceled and when the Russian Empire fell that year, he made his way back to his native Estonia through France, England, Norway, and Finland. When the Estonian Provisional Government declared independence, he joined the new army where an officer noticed the vast difference between Ants’s skill with a wrench and with a rifle. He was put to work immediately on getting the captured trucks and armored cars running again before helping to design and build Anton Irv’s armored trains. With Estonian independence secured, Ants returned to racing. In 1922, he was back at the Indianapolis 500 as a driver and 1923 saw him secure a sixth-place finish in a car of his own design.
