Vincent Duncan
Vincent Duncan is a professor of ancient history at the Pennsylvania of Michigan. Many people see his genial personality and perpetually sunburnt scalp and assume that he's an ivory-tower academic, the truth couldn't be more different. Duncan has been part of major expeditions for more than thirty years, having spent several years working on the excavation of the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt.
One aspect of Duncan's approach has been his opposition to the wholesale export of artifacts back to Europe and America. This has put him at odds with several major figures in the field and he would almost certainly have have been blacklisted long ago, if not for his expertise in recovering and restoring shattered shards that most others would have completely overlooked.
Much to the frustration of Stephen Langdon, Duncan refuses to wear a proper coat and tie while on the site and instead wears outlandishly patterned aloha shirts that he acquired while traveling in the Hawaiian Islands. He is one of the few westerners who is fluent in Arabic, and Langdon believes that Duncan is undermining the official authorities at the dig site. In reality, Duncan just makes a point of telling a joke in Arabic whenever Langdon walks by, so that the workers will laugh. He does this just to get under Langdon's skin.
