    The United States invades the Dominican Republic and forces the acceptance of a puppet government in order to protect American business interests.

    15 March

    Tsar Nikolai II Abdicates
    Disbandment

    Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov is forced to abdicate the throne of Russia, ending a nearly two hundred year line of Emperors and Empresses. On 22 March, he and his family is placed under arrest. On 17 July, he and his family are executed.

    The October Revolution leads to the collapse of the Russia Republic and a civil war between the Bolshevik Red Army and the anti-Bolshevik White Army.   As of this writing, all serious White Army resistance has ended and the Bolsheviks are in power.

    Spanish Flu Pandemic

    More than a quarter of the world's population contracts a particularly deadly strain of influenza. Because of the huge number of people still suffering from injuries, malnutrition, and displacement from the Great War, this outbreak becomes a pandemic, spreading around the world. Roughly 17.5 million people die.

    The Chrysanthemum Revolution, led by Count Mihály Károlyi, brings down the Austro-Hungarian Empire and establishes the Hungarian People's Republic.

    Baltic Wars of Independence

    With the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Germany installs a constitutional federal government to ensure a peaceful, stable future.

    5 January

    German Workers' Party Founded
    Political event

    A new political party is founded in Germany by Anton Drexler. The core tenets are nationalism and antisemitism. The party remains small and virtually unnoticed until a German Army private named Adolf Hitler is appointed as an intelligence agent and order to infiltrate the organization.   Hitler's oratory skills soon begin to attract more members and on 24 February 1920, it renames itself the National Socialist German Workers' Party. On 29 July 1921, Hitler is elected party chairman.

    Irish War of Independence
    Revolution

    Irish republicans gain control of most local governments, causing the British government to impose martial law. A bloody uprising begins with numerous acts of intense violence. Eventually Ireland is partitioned into Northern Ireland, which remained under British control, and the Irish Free State.

    Political event

    Lenin and Troksky found the Communist International to foster the spread of global communism.

    11 October

    Turkish War of Independence
    Revolution

    After the Ottoman Empire is occupied, following its capitulation at the end of the Great War, the Turkish National Movement begins armed conflict against the occupying armies. Eventually, the Ottoman Empire is partitioned into several pieces.   The nations of Turkey and Armenia are established, Greece reaches its current form, and the French and British Mandates of Syria, Mesopotamia, and Transjordan are created.

    The Treaty of Versailles ends the Great War between Germany and the Allied Powers. The treaty calls for the disarmament of Germany, territorial concessions, and the payment of reparations.

    Republic of Austria Founded
    Political event

    The Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye establishes the Republic of Austria. creating a small, densely populated country with minimal ability to feed itself, many who consider themselves Austrian located in other countries, and a serious grudge against both former enemies and allies.

    The Hungarian Republic is succeeded by the Kingdom of Hungary, which is ruled as a regency by Admiral Miklós Horthy, despite two unsuccessful efforts by King Charles IV to reclaim his throne.

    Great Iraqi Revolt
    Revolution

    More than a hundred thousand Iraqis take up arms against the British occupation force. Eventually, over 130,000 British and Indian soldiers are involved, with roughly 2200 British and 8500 Iraqi casualties. After the revolt is put down, control over the British forces in the country is turned over to the RAF.

    Mohandas Gandhi Launches Non-Cooperation Movement in India
    Civil action

    The non-cooperation movement aims to end the purchase of British goods and services while also refusing to provide Indian labor for British industries and organizations.   The movement's goals are strictly non-violent and it comes to an end after the Chauri Chaura incident where police fired on movement protesters.

    King Tutankhamun's Tomb is Opened
    Discovery, Exploration

    Howard Carter discovers the tomb of Tutankhamun in November of 1922. On this date, he opens the tomb in the presence of official witnesses from the British and Egyptian governments and numerous reporters.
