The Night of the Dread Blades is the name that was given to a violent event in Fainarr orchestrated by Emperor Otagi Nakomori. While Fainarr believed it was an effort to assassinate King Ridvan Basaran, it was actually a test of Fainarr's defenses and a scouting mission. Casualties were minimal, yet the event gained notoriety because no one knew that the Dread Blades were in the capital--or the castle--until morning came and the bodies of guards were discovered, having been silently slain.

A Dread Blade is a special military unit in Zukei's army. A single Dread Blade is highly-trained in the art of espionage, stealth, and murder. They are commonly used as scouts rather than assassins, but they are more than capable of killing when necessary. Zukei rarely deploys them, as part of the power of a Dread Blade is the fear that one might come, and you will never know when. Once Zukei joined the war against Fainarr in 1415, Emperor Otagi Nakomori sent six Dread Blades to Fainarr on a scouting mission. The Dread Blades sent were never discovered, but evidence of their passing was found in the many guards they had silently slain during the night, unnoticed. The knowledge that the enemy had been within Fainarr's walls without the knowledge of the guards or citizens sent ripples of distrust and fear across the nation. Morale within Fainarr decreased further.
