The Time of Troubles was caused by Bane and Myrcul trying to steal the Tablets of Fate from the over-deity Ao. As punishment for the gods often putting their own goals ahead of those of their followers, Ao punished them by casting them down to live as mortals (with the exception of Helm, who was set to guard the path back.
