The elves want to create a sacred place... and nearly destroy the world in the process.

A large group of mages of all races, but mostly elves and especially encouraged by the gold elves, set out to bring a place of bliss and harmony to the battered world. Others warn about old stories about similar things going wrong, or they just think it's a bad idea in general. The dark elves were almost immediately excluded from the ritual - as were the elves that opposed it.   The ritual killed all the mages who cast it, with the exception of the elf named Starleaf that had been used as the focus. She instead woke up on the newly created island of Evermeet and was greeted by the gods Corellon Larethian and Angharradh who declared that they had helped.   But the ritual had caused devastation all over Faerûn and the rest of Toril. Cities had burned, mountains cracked, and magic itself became unreliable. The toll on the world is immeasurable.
