Celestial Deck

The celestial deck is a Playing Card format that originated in Suto. It takes its name from the original names of its suits, which are based on the Constellations.   A celestial deck contains sixty cards, divided into twelve suits. Each suit contains five cards, four numbered zero-to-three and a fifth called the coronet or master. By convention, cards one-to-three feature an appropriate number of images of whatever the suit is named for. The zero card has a single image surrounded by a circle, while the master is a single image surmounted by a coronet.   Traditionally, the suits are named for the signatory constellations, but there are many variants. In the Pirate Principalities, for example, the suits are named for fish, while decks in the Empty Quarter often use the various flowers of the desert; in both cases, the decks can be confusing to those not familiar with the specific faune or flora of the area.   Some more recent decks instead have four suits, named for the cardinal signatories of the four quarters (dragon, snake, swan and eagle.) with cards numbered zero-to-ten and four 'court' cards: the enforcer, the adviser, the heir and the master, denote by a blade, a rod, and orb and the coronet. This format facilitates the use of the deck for foreign games.
