The origins of the manifold deck are obscure, but it is one of the most ancient formats of
Playing Card eck in
Aiaos.
There are in fact two distinct variations of the manifold deck. The earlier consists of twenty-two cards, sometimes divided into four suits - growth, connection, possession and compulsion - of five cards and one - doom - of two. Where the deck is divided into suits, the cards are still part of a single, numbered sequence from 0-21. This is the format found in the earliest known decks.

The second format consists of four suits, with the same names as the earlier version, each consisting of thirteen cards numbered 1-13 and given a name. Some more recent decks combine the style of the manifold with the organisation of an
Eastern Deck, with twelve cards in each suit and the two cards of the doom suit as wild cards.
