The modern language of the
Orcs is rooted in the dark tongue, but by deliberate effort in the early years after
the Uprising was transformed into something quite distinct. Some of these changes were more than merely aesthetic. The word 'orc' originally came from the dark tongue word oruk, meaning worshipper, or one who submits to divinity. In the modern language, the term for orc is instead 'arak', meaning those who listen, refering to the voices of the ancestors and the oral history of the species.
Modern orc is written using two related scripts, the phonetic
Lectogrammatic Orc and the more symbolic
Ideogrammatic Orc.
