Playing Cards

Playing cards of various forms are a common recreational item on Aiaos. They are used for playing social, solitary and competitive Card Games, the last of which has led to an association with gambling.   While early decks made of papyrus, vellum, parchment or even rigid materials such as ivory were prestige items, the development of paper across Aiaos (principally by the High Elves of the Regime and artisans of the early Elysian Federation) and printing (by the artificers of Yethera) have led to them becoming an increasingly common item among all walks of life.   Card decks typically follow one of five common formats:
  1. Daroka decks follow the pattern of tarokka decks introduced by Vistani travellers.
  2. Foundation decks, common in Caino.
  3. The Eastern Deck, common in Yethera.
  4. Manifold Decks contain either twenty-two numbered and named cards, or four suits of thirteen cards each. They are said to be based on a deck of cards created by the gods themselves and the twenty-two card version is thought to be the oldest known format, used in the majority of antique prestige decks.
  5. Celestial Decks originate in Suto and are notable for having many suits and relatively few suits in each.
