4: Dalledale Shrine | Town Massacre

General Summary

Following up back in Lamplight on rumors related to potential shrien loactions led the party to visit Dalledale next. Leaving Lamplight for now, they traveled over a week to arrive at a small town just starting out, much different from the bustling and prosperous trade center they knew from their own timeline's Dalledale.

Visiting the shrine outside of town, the party is met with fierce resistance and battle with a shadow creature controlled by an unknown woman who ends the fight by fleeing with unnatural speed into the forest. Once inside the shrine, they find that this is not one of the places they seek, but a hub allowing teleportation for Mystra's faithful to travel between her holy sites.

They repair the site, and gather some odd blue crystals. When they “power it up,” a war forged (K9) teleports into the circle, having little to no memory. After heated discussions and tense confrontations, they decide this warforged must be related to Mystra’s quest, thus K9 joins the party.

Before heading to town, the party tracks the woman from the shrine to a bandit camp. Combat ensues in which the mysterious woman flies off as a cloud of mist. Interrogating the men reveals that they are a small contingent of town guards under the command of Roderick Draven, lord of Dalledale, manufacturing a crisis to scare the town into building better defenses. At this "camp,' they meet Garud Bhagat, a well known merchant of information, often employed in these types of schemes. He strikes a deal with the party for safe passage back to town, and tells them about the area and the mysterious woman they tracked here, Julia Earnsthart.

Back in town, they discover it is under attack by strange fleshy undead creatures. There are heavy casualties. After the fight, they trade some of these crystals to Argyle Burrows for schematics to a device called the Magi-Scope that will help them identify points of interest where magic is showing chaotic influences.

Before leaving town, the party confronts Roderick about his scheme and lies to the town. He argues his point well, convincing the party that he has in fact caused no harm since his men only created a false sense of scarcity and attacked nobody. Furthermore, the attack on the town proves that he was right to push the towns people to build defenses. Too little too late. He tasks the party with escorting Marcus Spatz, a new party member whose family had perished on the journey to Dalledale, back to The White City so he can attend to family affairs there, and the party may collect a reward for the escort.
