[Contest] Waking the Animancer
Generic article | Jul 19, 2018

Create your own character for the Aqualon setting and get a chance at playing in the “The Animancer” campaign!

The contest "Waking the Animancer" was a character writing competition, where participants had to create their own Aqualon character using the resources of this world and of course my personal support, providing answers to open questions and proofreading their work as well as helping with canonization. In the end, three people participated, writing amazing characters that are now real characters in the world of Aqualon and part of its history! In participating, they also earned table spots for the ongoing "The Animancer" FATE tabletop roleplaying game.

The "Poets of Rahn" challenge was the first challenge of the Aqualon Builders Guild and encouraged participants to write a short poem about Lake Rahn, the Spire of Rahn, or a water-themed poem. In the end, two people participated, writing very inspired poems that were a joy to read. Both were awarded bricks for the Aqualon Builders Guild and one participant received ownership of the beautiful The Rahn Cottage.

Water, water, this you see,
Through the shining bliss we be,
Swiftly, slowly, as we care,
This is our breath, we need no air;

From the seas across this realm,
We bring our young to bear in elm,
Roots splay far across our ground,
These woods hold fast and do not drown;

Our lives are short and are not missed,
From this we learn to just subsist,
This is us, we all are fish.

We thank the water of the lake.
Granting us fat fish.
We thank the river for what we take.
Fresh water and wood as we wish. For less danger than the vicious seas.
We can rest easily.
Unlike those who must wish for as the brine pleases.
Those who must wait feebly. We thank the waters of the Rahn.
As we fish and sail her waters.
We have no fear of ocean abyss for we where we sit upon.
Oh might Rahn we thank you as your sons and daughters.

The General that Drowned Himself
  Two countries, one command,
Three great lakes, and millions of troops.
高铁泪 (Gao Tie Lei) is his name,
The southern general of the Yamato Kingdom.
He came from the country of Yamato,
His wife was banished to the sea.
Every day, tears flow down his cheeks,
Every day, he waits to return to his homeland.
The sound of the gong echoed by the lake that day,
The general was surprised, and looked up at the sky.
What news would he recieve?
Would his exile be annulled?
He ran out of the market,
The businessman called but he didn't buy.
As the guards stepped away from the door,
With haste he rushed inside.
As soon as he heard the message, a chill passed through his heart.
His king has just been killed in battle.
He let the hope out of his chest.
His king had just died in battle.
That day, the water was like glass,
The eternal ice tower like the Jingwei1

The Jingwei is a mythical Asian bird, who, after the creation of the world, drowned in the ocean. It was reborn, and now it spends its time filling the sea in with pebbles. It is a symbol of dogged perseverance against odds.

One general committed suicide,
One corpse drifting west with the wind.

The martyr of the Yamato country.

Three people participated in the "Auri, Auri, Stay Indoors!" October challenge. Their entries were a pleasure to read and really impressed me. All were awarded bricks for the Aqualon Builders Guild and one participant received ownership of the beautiful and probably only mildly cursed 万善屋敷 Banzen Yashiki.

Lament for the Captain

The coast is a strip of iron for ten thousand li,
The sea reflects the mountains and the moon.
Butterflies fly next to the ancient road,
Next to the road is a bloody corpse.

Zijiang cuts the east face of the South Mountain,
The mountain's pure snow is whiter than white.
The captain on the shore looks at the sea,
The port is in the distance seen.

The butterfly's wings are like midnight,
The captain’s eyes gaze at the moon,
The bluebirds sit upon the trees,
The east wind extinguishes the captain's lamp.

The poison fell towards the captain,
The captain panicked eyes look at the sky.
The body is paralyzed, the mind in panic,
The purple butterfly is at the river.

Once poisoned, one is comatose*
The captain lies sick by the river,
The butterfly comes down from mountain,
Blood now gushes from his heart.

The coast is a strip of iron for ten thousand li,
The sea reflects the mountains and the moon.
Butterflies fly next to the ancient road,
The roadside grass is stained red with blood.

*昏迷不醒 literally means "drowsy sleep never wakes", is a four word idiom for being comatose

“You see, my dears, there wasn’t always these great lands and these tall trees in the world. There once was a time of darkness, of horrors that you cannot even imagine. Horrors that stood as tall as mountains, whose bodies looked as frail as the reeds that grow along our rivers. These monsters, they would prey on the people of the land. They would crush the crops that fed their families, they would steal and eat the horses that were used to plough fields and travel across the land. They even used to steal people! If you were unlucky enough to wander out in the evening alone, when one of those horrors stood even on the horizon, you would be snatched up and taken! No one was ever seen again! I don’t know if these men and women were eaten or just used as playthings, but one thing is for certain! You’ll never see one and live to tell the tale! You’ll be damned, I tell you, children! Damned! For all eternity! You’ll not sleep another night, not a single wink! You’ll see only the nightmares that they bring before them, visions of a world of grey! I should know! I've seen them...”
