The Fothwirin Marshes

When Drake’s canals were dug the water table for the region fundamentally changed, and hundreds of square miles of pastoral land were waterlogged for generations, creating a region of marshlands and small lakes to the north and west of the city. The Fothwirin is accessible only by shallow sail boats and barges, and has become a de facto homeland for the Ferry Folk, who are the most discriminated against and marginalised peoples of the Mill Lands. It has also become a haven for fugitives from the law and those who have been cast out of Mill Landish society.   Selras Castle, the baronial home of the Mothperin family, distant relatives of the Revers, has become half waterlogged and instead of being accessible by horse, it must be accessed by boat, with the lower levels of the castle being completely submerged. The Mothperins themselves have long since become accustomed to the fact that the lands they once ruled over have been forever changed and the peasants they once commanded have gone. In Pelonastra, the Lords Elect of the Council look upon the Fothwirin region with a sense of resignation and despair, knowing that their law only extends as far as Drake.   Those who find a home in the Fothwirin Marshes adhere to an unspoken rule; never ask about the past. The Fothwirians know that newcomers have come to the inlets and marshes to escape whatever past they have. They are aided by the challenging terrain and the low marsh fog that hangs over the land.
