Meridian Observatory

Purpose / Function

Meridian Observatory's purpose is to research the universe, with a primary focus on transforming their astronomy students into proper astronomers.

Alterations

Meridian Observatory's original building started as a small telescope and sight-based observatory, before the invention of modern telescopes. The photograph to your right was taken before the most important alteration, taken for posterity. Nowadays, the top is a full dome, like most observatories.

History

Meridian Observatory was nearly as old as Meridian Academy, though their astronomical programming was still in its infancy at the time in preference to other scientific pursuits that were more within civilization's grasp at the time. The building later became an invaluable asset to the academy as their reputation as a school of scientific study skyrocketed along with the news that the first satellite launch was engineered by one of their professors.
It quickly became the central hub for researchers, at times to the detriment of the students themselves who vie for time and research space against professionals as well as the professors, who both wanted to do their own research and worried for the academic development of their pupils. Meanwhile, the city of Oseca's gift shops churned out magnet after magnet of the skyline, always including the striking observatory in the background.
Unfortunately, the Meridian Observatory met the same end as the rest of Oseca during a severe bombing, thus ending the city's (and the observatory's) career as the leading educational hub in the world.

Tourism

By design, all but the most determined tourists were capable of simply walking right up to the building, seeing as it would require jumping multiple locked gates on the way up. These would be given a police escort back off of the property as a firm reminder that Meridian Academy only accepted tourist groups that are booked in advance. These groups were usually most eager to see the view of the city from the mountaintop than the observatory itself, but it brought in good money for the academy as well as provided students with a productive part-time job.
