School Dean

A School Dean is the profession in charge of a School, both educationally and politically. Even though originally it was comparable to a regular college dean, currently it has slowly become the equivalent of a president. School Deans usually remain in their job for the reast of their lives and the profession is widely regarded as a very important and influential one.

Origins

During the Scholar Age, Deans were the only leaders of the educational side of Schools. Although they oversaw the political life of the School's territories, they delegated these tasks to their subordinates. However, when these power structures collapsed at the end of the Scholar Age, Deans took over the political duties in full.

Social perception

Schools have little territory, but since all licensed arcanists swear lifelong loyalty to their Schools, Deans are seen as very powerful and influential people. For example, according to most Schools' laws, their Dean could recall all arcanists and create an army.

Requirements

The exact requirements vary between Schools, but generally all Deans should fullfill most (if not all) of this requirements:
  • Be a licensed arcanist by that School.
  • Be a powerful/skilled arcanist. This is usually proven in a test done by the School's ruling council.
  • Have good teaching methods, as teaching could be one of the activities that the Dean occasionally engages in.
  • Have a good grasp of international politics, as well as the School's system, and have good diplomatic skills. Deans not only lead council meeting, but can also pass executive orders, veto laws, and act as ambassadors.
  • Not be licensed by any other School. This ensures that the Dean will only be loyal to their School and will prevent conflicts of interests.
