Maxwell Splitter

"But that's impossible!"   "They've got one impossible technology, why not two?"   "What do you mean?"   "That beam they have, that turns humans to crystal-bearing stone? It's not normal, it doesn't belong in a standard universe."   "But, electromagnetism is one of the basic forces of the universe, their ability to PLAY with it like this is insulting. To science!"   "Suppose we try to explain it without causality, does the science even make sense?"   "Hmm, ok, that's a new tack, I don't think that's been tried. So, if they had some way to reverse the polarity of a small number of electrons, replace them with positrons... What's the precision on these readings?"   "About 0.026eV, why?"   "Because depending on the quantity of actual electrons replaced by positrons, that'd match the observed effects, down to the precision of the readings."   "But that's impossible!"   "I know, let's worry about explaining it later, I imagine it'll be quite a pickle."   "Why do you say that?"   "How do we defend against it, if it makes no sense?"   The statement was met by silence.
