Noxkilar Night

Write a myth or legend surrounding a figure of kindness, giving or hospitality. — #WorldEmberMyth

It was the last night of the year, and everyone was quiet, none wanted to have the red eye of Dread Noxkillar fall on them, not on this night of all nights.
— From the book of forgotten tales of the Tlalor

"Can you believe this? Even after a millenia, these fools still use me to frighten their children!"

"Dread master, it is useful to your agents that they keep believing so..."

"Oh?"

"Yes, those who... enforce your will and detect sedition and malfeasance in your troops, they very much use this legend as an excuse for your people not to hide anything from them. I'm told it's most useful in letting them go where they are needed."

"Preposterous! Truly my enemies would not be stopped by such a shallow subterfuge!"

"Perhaps not, but nothing that makes neutrality to your aims less likely harms your interest, quite the opposite..."

"Just what are you saying, Shamadly?"

"Anyone who does not show true transparence to your agents is immediately marked for further study. It is very useful to classify the people in two camps."

"And we have enough agents to suspect everyone?"

"Not quite, just enough to suspect those who benefit most highly from your rule, and those who are actively harmed by it. So far, it's highly effective."

Summary

Tlalor children are taught that the red eye of Noxkillar will fall on them if they do not behave, as he sees all. When one claims to be his agent, those that do gain the instant credibility of one who could be killed instantly by an omniscient, omnipotent observer, should he lie. If the children do behave throughout the year, they may be rewarded. Emphasis on 'may'. Tlakla Votive Candles are thought to be a particular vessel of consciousness of the Noxkiller. During the Tlaloran winter holidays it is a terminal sin to deny guests anything, in case they are the Noxkiller in disguise, for which he would inflict immediately the fatal punishment: soul erasure.

The Noxkiller itself is a legendary being, made up of smoke and shadows, intangible, but unstoppable, with red flaming eyes, capable of going through walls, and seizing any Tlalor it sees into its razor sharp, 30cm long claws, and its fangs are capable of piercing any defense any of those Tlalor can devise. It is a 3m tall robotic figure, relentless, epic in its pursuit, and literally unstoppable.

Reality

This is purely propaganda. Nox-1 K-1-LAR , who inspired the legend, is a real person, and the tyrannical ruler of all True Tlalor. But he commissioned the writings that survive about the legend, and likely manufactured every detail of it. However, none have been so powerful as to block it, and young True Tlalor grow up believing, at least partly, and as such, grow his influence. As hinted at earlier, it's also helped by his secret police, who do use it partly for propaganda, and partly as a kind of occam's razor of true believers.
