Yarra Nararu
"What are you showing me there, big feller?"
"Yarra Nararu, yugg, nug-nug, naki, ninaki-noo."
"Hmm." *taps universal translator*
Proper Noun for Deep hole, ancient, venerable tree.
"So, it's a hole, or a tree?" The translatoed emitted: Nakiyiyugg?
"Naki, Yugg, Yarra Nararu." The hairy, large alien was gesturing, pointing to a deep hole, then making a rising gesture, like a plant flowering from the depths.
"Ok, so it's a plant that starts in the water, and grows into the air? That's interesting. And it's nearby?" Yarra Nararu inaki nugnug? Adian looked at the surface of the water, not seeing anything, apart from the island nearby. Wait, Island?
The hairy alien covered its face with its paw, then pointed to the dark green island. "Yarra Nararu."
Adian looked up, and up, and up... 150 metres of 'tree' above sea level. Except, it was, he checked his sensorpad. A full four thousand meters to the sea floor.
"Yarra Nararu " The translator squeaked its last and died.
"Great, I don't suppose you speak terran, do you big feller?"
"Urk, no, well, I listen to it well enough, but GRr grrGrgGr my throat has trouble with some of the sounds."
"You spoke my language all this time?"
"Not speak, but you think we would let you go into a dangerous area with a guide that cannot understand you? We are warriors, not stupids!"
And so the chasm of misunderstanding, at least, was crossed.
"This is a sea algae?"
"Sea-grass. Good eating, make bread."
"Bread? But... Doesn't it spead seed under water?"
"Under, and over, seasalt make the seed hardy, so if underwater, seed big and tough, if dried in air, seed light. Both good eating, but water seeds more work. Only Yarra Nararu in chasm though, only it go this deep. Most sea-grass only two-three storeys deep."
"And how many of your people live from Yarra Nararu's seed?"
"Three villages, easy. It's a big tree."
Adian looked up. "Yeah, I agree with you." Adian started seeing the barge behind the tree.
"What's that boat?"
"Farming boat, picking up underwater seed."
"Yarra Nararu, yugg, nug-nug, naki, ninaki-noo."
