Coriolis TGD Extended Delve

This Extended Delve is a home brew or house rule that is intended to take the delving aspect of Coriolis: the Great Dark Quickstart into a more narrative direction while seeking to involve each member of the team. Hopefully this will make Delving less rinse and repeat of a board game. The goal would be to make each leg of the journey an interesting encounter.

Preparation

  • Gear and supplies
  • Deep Scan (Logic + Talent + Scanners)
  • Bird Blight Scan (Insight + Talent+ Garuda Device)

  •

    Into the Depth

At the start of a delving and at each leg of the delve the members of the team chooses how they will contribute to the exploration into the depth of the site. This will be a test for each member of the team (up to 4 characters) to contribute their success to the overall goal. Each members delving roll is penalized by the Delve Class, successes contribute to the team progress.
Pace of the Delve can be increased by NOT using the Delve Class as a penalty to the Delve actions. Up to four team members rolling a delve action is intended based on keeping the common number of actual players engaged. If the GM has more than 5 players he should use good judgement on keeping them engaged but controlling the pace of the delve. One example would be give the fifth member a special task important to the delve but not part of the delve action.

    Delving Actions

  • Delving (Agility): Delving involves moving forward for each member while selecting the best route and positioning your equipment for maximum effectiveness. Delving is not just the act of moving one's self but the movement of each members coordinated within the team. It is common that the delving expert is also the team leader but not always
  • Guarding (Perception): Guarding involves being watchful, observant and maybe slightly paranoid. You are watching for ambush positions from ahead or behind from unsavory competition or even worse blight touched creatures. You are also on the look out for dangerous environmental hazards.
  • Scanning (Logic): Continuing to update your scanning map of the delves and refine or correct the details as you move deeper. No map is 100% complete on the first pass. You may know you trip down is 14 markers after the first scan but there are always surprises, branches and details to be updated.
  • Scouting (Insight): The art of scouting is identifying the blight locations and their strength while continuing to monitor the teams relationship to the Blight. Even more so than scanning, the blight is not fully understood and can have unexpected results. Best to keep an eye, or both eyes on the blight at all times.
  • Support (Logic): When acting in support you are checking and maintaining first your gear and secondly the gear of your team. Common slang is the "nag" but this this saves lives when making sure your equipment functions at critical moments. This is a common pastime of the Burrower but the readiness of the gear is everyone's responsibility.

    Forward and down

With Extended Delving the team moves down a number of markers equal to their successes unless the GM has a reason this would not be possible. The GM may interrupt the movement with events that would block their descent including creatures. These interruptions should be interesting and story driven.   Examples
  • Competition has left traps
  • Planned encounter
  • Enemies wait in ambush
  • Enemies or competition catch up
  • Delve Event
  • Failed gear on a push
  • Rest

    Delving Example ...

Jereman leads the way Delving as his team starts their descent knowing he would not allow another to pull on a rope that he has not tugged first, not again.   The whirl of your exo-suit is music to your ears Messima, as you consult the portable unit again Scanning and updating the information. Yann gives you a sour look that says not to break his scanner or you will never hear the end of it.   Yann you are almost bubbling with excitement as you send Pteryc just ahead to continue Scouting the blight. They keep saying the blight is not alive but you have seen things, things that make you question...   Charima you play to your strengths and your well founded paranoia, as you are the last one down taking the rear Guard position.

  •

  •

    Delve Events

The GM should prepare at minimum a brief event at each marker of the delves ahead of time. One line or a couple of words should do it. In addition I recommend preparing several either fixed events at positions on the map you want them or have several floating events to pop in when you feel appropriate.
For more variety draw on other resources you own to generate blight creatures and events.
