The alarmed lock is a mid-price magic-tech item that may be installed into a single property. When the lock is picked, or an attempt is made to infiltrate the building, the device sounds a loud alarm (3 options available: screeching, a deep bell, and rolls of thunder). Depending on the size of the building, a more powerful lock may be required.

The history of the Alarmed Lock

The arms race of locks and lock-pickers is a constant one, and locks have long fallen foul to talented rogues. But a full magical warding ritual - previously the only alternative - was a complex, time-consuming, and expensive process, and required hiring a powerful magic user each time the lock was tripped and the alarm sounded.

The Alarmed Lock was invented by the twin brothers Potemmik - one a blacksmith and one a mage - living in the city of Laudon. The Peter Potemmik, the blacksmith, wanted to keep his factory and shops safe against thieves, and knew plenty of others who did too - but they were unable to afford the services of a mage. Peter and Paul Potemmik worked together to create the prototype, infusing the cooling metals of the lock with spells. To test it, they even hired thieves to attempt to pick it. The line was a roaring success, and launched their career as magic-tech inventors.

Installing Potemmik's Alarmed Lock

The lock requires a mage for the original installation but, once situated in a property, it can easily be reset each time by the owner. The installation practice is a secret entrusted only to those who have qualified as Potemmik's official installers, but observers have noted that various traipsing around the property whilst swearing is a necessary part of the ritual.

I like the three sounds it can make. I'm sure neighbors would be so happy with the "screeching" one.
