Duchy of Hillfar

The Duchy of Hillfar (HILL-far) is a duchy within the Grand Duchy of Devarin. It is located between the Unbroken Sea to the east, and the Wyrmling Mountains to the north. The current Duchess is Otig Arryn, 2nd Duchess Hillfar.

History

Following heavy raiding from nearby steppe horsemen tribes in the year 1136, Grand Duke Ichard Noke ordered the settling and establishment of the border duchies to act as shields against future raids. Hillfar was the name given to the region in the strategic point between the Unbroken Sea and the Wyrmling Mountains. Settlement was encouraged in many of the core regions of the nation by giving new settlers grants of coin and land. In 1142, the Duchy of Hillfar was officially created, and the title granted to Olgumir Arryn. In 1384 the Duchy was inherited by Otig Arryn after the death of her father.

Economy

Hillfar enjoys a robust and mixed economy because of its location between the Unbroken Sea and the Maglam Ocean. Trade ships from Athelney and Ecrin make their way across the sea, through Hillfar, and depart across the ocean to Devarin.   In other locations of Hillfar, the primary source of income is ranching, farming, and mining, particularly the extraction and refinement of ores. Hillfar metals are particularly sought after as being of the highest quality for weapons and armor.
