City-States - Anchors for Cultures

The role of City-State is simple. Administrate local governance in a variety of forms, provide for common defense, and establish an identity for its peopls. While this list is somewhat streamlined, it defines the majority of such nation-states of Nycos simply enough to allow a quick concept of what kind of place each city-state is, along the governance spectrum.

Aristocracy

Governed by a small group deemed to be purposed for governance. Such nations use PLACE to determine who qualifies for the Aristocracy.

Democracy

Theoretically governed by the vote of the whole, the city-states that adhere to this are usually smaller in size, and often have a parlaimentary process to handle daily challenges, rather than 'tyranny of the majority'.

Kritarchy

Governance by Judges. Elected by a jury of their peers, a Chief Justice and eight Senior Justices, form a Supreme Court that is final abiter of issues that the lower courts (Superior Courts and Appellate Courts) cannot decide.

Monarchy

A single leader has arisen, and the right of succession is usually terribly important to this form. Usually has religious or philosophical judiciaries to handle less challenging issues, and often has a strong military or public support structure

Oligarchy

Governance by an established few, this form usually is a devolved Timocracy, where certain families abrogate their duties to others, or where the lasting power of stronger families wins out. Generally preferable to tyranny but not to monarchy.

Theocracy

Governance by religious or philosophical zealots, blurring the lines between spiritual and physical laws and adherence. Most often has strogn philosophical or military support structures.

Timocracy

Landholders form the basis for this form of governance, and so hold a form of confederation, sharing the load in terms of decision-making. Generally is a younger government, that has not evolved or devolved by graft or corruption yet.

Tyranny

A single leader, or small cabal, holds sway, usually through intimidation and persuasiveness. Fairly inefficient with great and small corruptions in place, Tyrants very rarely remain in power for long periods unless they combine with other governmental types
