Session 17: The Battle of the Graves

General Summary

In this episode of DREAM THIEVES...

United at Last

Just as Torrentous and Gervil were ready to strike at the young wood elf about to make matters worse, Aeða stepped in with a more deviously diplomatic approach. Using her Words of Terror, she began sowing discord and doubt in the young man's mind, redirecting his woe towards the special flute he held in his hand. Eventually his mind broke, and he threw the lute into the trees, running away for his life.   Our heroes found the grave of a young woman who had been killed at the alter on her wedding day, the young Mariella. The heroes offered their services to her, but she thanked them by mind jacking three of them, sending them off into the graveyard looking for things unknown. She asked to find her a husband, only Gervil remained free to look with his mind in tact.   Gervil returned to the city guards and found one agreeable to the Union. He convinced the guard to become Mariella's husband. Mariella ended up being skeptical of the Union, but it was too late. The guard dragged her back down into her grave, and our heroes recovered their mental capacity to venture onward.

The Final Battle

After more searching, the team found Jessa's parents who were lying paralyzed on the floor of one of the mausoleums! Outside, dark forces were amassing at the corners of the cemetary. Jessa flew to their side, but an evil laughter beckoned the heroes to return to the light of the moon and face him.   It was the masked figure that had been chasing them since their escape from their prison cells! The masked figure seemed erratic, running on his last faith attempt to capture them. He slaughtered his men, a diabolical offering to some unknown god that granted him the ability to spawn his powers once more.   Our heroes fought valiantly, recombining pieces of the horrifying figure's soul so he could be weakened and attacked directly. Eventually their power was too great, and they finally brought the man to his end.   There was an EPIC BOSS CHEST containing a treasure trove of loot.   On the dead man was a letter with information from a mysterious organization, who mentioned that they were on their wits end waiting for the man to bring the thieves. The letter said that they would unleash Project X on the masked figure if he were to fail again.

Entering Riverwind

After the chaos of battle subsided and the team checked on their own injuries, they decided it best to retreat into the portal door to Riverwind. Guests do not normally see the door to Riverwind, but when holding their hand they can enter in along with the heroes.   Crossing the threshhold into their new home, the heroes took in their surroundings for the first time. Riverwind was a large 2 story mansion, completely empty. The walls and floors were a rich dark mahogany wood, with stone inlay and windows that looked out into what could only be described as an endless sea of open space, tinted deep purple and dark blacks.   Jessa and her mother and father, unharmed, were taken into another room to rest and recover.   The heroes found one set of items waiting for them in the main hall. Five small crystalline orbs were sitting on the ground, arranged carefully. On approach, five figures, one from each orb, magically entered the space. They introduced themselves as "the butlers".   Our heroes were being asked, oddly by the building itself, to choose a butler that would handle the house's affairs in their presence and in their absence. The butler they chose could be trusted completely, if the heroes could handle their personalities and manner of running the home.   Our heroes chose Baroness Von Schrader, a Tiefling governess that would run the home with a strict hand, but would also be a reliable ally in combat should such an event ever arise. Her chosen weapon was the stock whip, a short whip with multiple leather strands that formed a tough lashing if found on the wrong end of it.

Getting Settled

Baroness told the heroes that the first order of business was to choose their rooms. The second floor of Riverwind was to be dedicated private spaces for the heroes, their side kicks and guests to get away from public life. There were five bedrooms on the 2nd floor, and an epic dual between Azriel and Aeða played out to see who would get the coveted master bedroom with the deck that led out to view the vast infinite dreamspace outside. Aeða was victorious by a hair, and Azriel accepted the fair duel's outcome. All heroes settled into their new rooms.   Finally, Baroness mentioned that Riverwind's 1st floor had many spaces for dedicated rooms that could be equipped with a tremendous number of functions. One room would be prepared for them, but all others would have to be constructed with the right resources and materials. The heroes chose to outfit a 'Magician's Den'; a space dedicated to arcane research and learning.   Suddenly, they heard a knock on their front door. In walked Gildur, Jacques and, to their surprise, Gino the illusion Wizard they'd met at Bandit Beach and had been encountering at distance throughout their travels.   "Welcome to Riverwind," said Gildur. "It was a long hard fought path to get here, but this is only the beginning. We have much to discuss."   With our heroes in their new home, what is next on their quest?
