Session 3: Bandit Beach

General Summary

In this episode of dream thieves...   Our heros managed to escape the clutches of The Cloaked Figure, but before doing so they saw another glimpse at the truly awesome power they wield. The figure gazed at the sky, chanted an incantation and pulled incredible power down from the stars themselves, turning into a tornado horror. The power seemed to be connected to the specific constellation that responded to his call...   After they escaped through the dimension door, Jacques brought the carts to a stop at the uppermost settlement on the Gilded Alliance continent, Stockton Point, but coloquially known as Bandit Beach. He gave the heroes an ornate box containing 5 rings, each of which he said would obscure their location and hide them from the prying eyes of The Cloaked Figure.

The Pirate Tavern

Before setting out to explore the area, the heroes entered a country tavern and handled their tagalongs, Princess Penelope, Doctor Cedric and the Griffon Wyrmling. The princess and the doctor need to make their way home, and would be willing to do so without the help of the heroes, but if the heroes wish to intervene they could find a more expedient way of getting them where they need to go.   Gervil learned that Princess Penelope never wished to marry the "newly found" son of House Gregory, but it was an arranged marriage aimed at unifying both noble houses, who in truth are growing weaker in influence among Bradbureigh. Penelope is considering whether to go home or to chart her own path.   A group of pirate thugs were on the first floor of the country tavern singing a sea shanty they forgot the lyrics to. Gervil recalled the correct lyrics. Azriel spoke to them, and received a small quest to find a red pouch that had been taken by Cro'Barunn, leader of the bandit gang the Red Snare. If Azriel was able to bring the bag back to the pirate gang, he'd receive the key to the tavern's cellar, where potential treasure, or atleast rare wine, awaits.   Torentous and Zanuriel spoke to a separate group of pirates enjoying private conversation on the 2nd floor of the inn. They revealed themselves to be Hannah, Twin and Ken, the crewmembers of another Azarum Pirate outfit, The Cerulian. They said their captain, Fionna Wynne, had been traveling the Northern Seas and stopped at Bandit Beach for personal errands, and to give her crew brief shore leave. The crewmembers said they would grant the heroes an audience with their captain if they could complete at least one of the following three objectives:   1. Find the 'Wizard in the Woods' who was known to sell magical curiosities   2. Bring them a Fairy Berry   3. Help throw a group of Sea Elves off the trail of their ship who had been following them for a few days.   The DM explained the Azarum Alliance system, ie. how pirate factions are aligned around one D&D alignment, Chaotic Good, Neutral Evil, Etc., and warned that the heroes would not be able to maintain good favor with all factions, as many factions are at active war with one another.   The heroes met a friendly Ogre sitting outside the country tavern, yearning to belong to a group on Bandit Beach, but found it difficult due to being so big.

Into the Woods

Our heroes met Amelia Ignus, an apprentice artificer trying to break out an item known as the skiptrace hourglass from a derelict armature she found near the edge of the woods. The hourglass, used to power the Dwarven made armature, has the power to turn back time by six seconds, but is stuck behind a trap within the armature.   Our heroes then descended into the woods, where they met a ranger researching the Harengon Fairy circle, a ring of flowers used to transport Harengon wherever they wished to go across Somaria. They used a feathered violet to lure out Liff, a young Harengon warrior, to speak with them. He revealed that the violet belonged to an elder Harengon named Ophelion, who was missing. He had been taken to a potion shop in Union, where they were attempting to cure him of a sleeping sickness that kept him in a perpetual slumber.   Liff agreed with Gervil to supply a Fairy Berry to the heroes if they would help him find Ophelion. They agreed and parted ways. Before leaving, Liff showed the heroes how to pass by a dangerous Owlbear nest and make it to the other side of the river, passing the road blocked route held by the Red Snare bandit gang.

Illusions and Experiments

On the other side of the river they met a drifter named Pendel who was trapped in an illusion spell. Gervil, detecting many magical signatures in the area, found a hidden summoning stone and a door that had half phased through a tree. By casting magic at the stone, they were able to free the door from the tree and free a Illusion wizard named Gino Sigfried from his experiment gone wrong.   As thanks for freeing him, Gino offered to sell the heroes magical items and train Gervil in a spell, Minor Illusion, if they brought him items he could use in his illusion experiments.   Gino is selling: 2 Tickets to that thing you love (7 Gold) Ribbons of the Lost Princess (Only if they can bring him an illusion item)

Meeting the Forgotten Master

The heroes realized that they had neglected to put the rings on that Jacques had given them. Immediately after doing so, they fell into a deep slumber right in front of Gino. They opened their eyes to find that they were in a different tavern, empty, with only a lone bartender tending to them. He introduced themselves as Gildur. Zanuriel, suspicious about where he was, stepped outside to discover that the tavern was built precariously on the side of a mountain top. Everyone joined him outside, and with the flick of his finger, Gildur dropped the tavern off the cliff, leaving the heroes with him on the mountaintop.   Gildur told the heroes the story of the founders, great men and women of magic who made inventions that helped the world return to normalcy after the disastrous effects of The Constellation.   Gildur also said that there was a great evil spreading across the world, and The Cloaked Figure was just one hand of that evil cabal that would continue to track them down. This evil had an interest in eliminating anyone who was a member of a bloodline that had not witnessed The Constellation all those years ago.   He extended his hand, and invited the heroes to join his secret order, the DREAM THIEVES, a group of thieves that could enter the dreams of others, for both both lawful and unlawful gain.   But our heroes need to be trained as Dream Thieves before they can be set off on their own. What will Gildur teach them? How will it affect their presence in the real world?   Find out next time on Dream Thieves, Episode 3!
