Session 7: Welcome to Union

General Summary

In this week's episode of Dream Thieves...   Our heroes regrouped, got their bearings and formed a plan to gather the information they needed to find the lost heroes that held the key to Riverwind. They began by speaking to a local citizen who mentioned that the city was cracking down on citizenship demanding common folk carry and show their paperwork on request.

Window Shopping & People Watching

The team purchased a multitude of packs and gear from the local general store, but couldn't find the specialized tools they were looking for. They walked along the city streets, browsing the storefronts and shops available to them. They began by visiting Dragonsfire scrolls, a store for magic spell scrolls. Torrentous tried getting a better deal through some trickery on his part, but was discovered by the store owner, a powerful mage in her own right, and levitated him into the air. The team saw more powerful scrolls like invisibility were available as well, for a higher price. The shop owner wasn't too happy of hearing reports of thieves lurking under the city streets, and that the council of Union had every right to enforce law and order to flush them out.   Zanuriel revisited the snake that bit him, asking, as Aeða translated, why he was targeted for such an attack. The snake replied saying that Zanuriel was carrying the 'scent of the bronze serpent' a biochemical pheremonic signature of a Yuan-Ti clan. Zan decided he may have more than a word for Amelia next time they spoke...   Our heroes next met a woman whose husband was petitioning the city to defer their overdue rent as they tended to a sick child. The heroes did not immediately offer to help but made not of her need in case they found opportunity to help her. The heroes met with Sasha, a woman of the night waiting on her John, his identity yet unknown.

A Tavern for Wizards

Next they went to The Wizards Elixir, a magical tavern servings drinks that also doubled as exlirs (potions that have an ongoing effect). They met the proprieter Macmiller and bought a strength and dexterity elixir for Torentous and Azriel respectively. Zanuriel finally found a vendor to purchase an alchemy kit.   While they were resting in the tavern, those drinking found their alcohol toxicity level rising. At low, medium and high, various effects will be felt by the heroes when drinking that may affect their combat prowess (lowers), exploration abilities (varies) or social interaction (rises).   The heroes overheard a talking frog (who had insulted Aeða's honesty when they arrived) named Bartleby and a scholar named Ernest discussing a missing shipment of Goodberries. The heroes offered to find them in exchange for half of the shipment if they were found. Bartleby agreed.   The heroes returned to the scroll store and purchased the invisiblity scroll they saw during their first visit.

Nobles and their Allegiances

As they passed a city guard, wearing an Araby armature asking a citizen about their paperwork, they reached Turian Stormwind's home. They knocked and were invited in without suspicion. In the home, they met a unique set of characters visiting their neighbor.
  • Turian Stormwind, a wealthy nobleman living in the government center district.
  • Rodrigo De La Hoya, Animal Tamer and man of many adventures.
  • Tanya, a mysterious necromancer
  • The Man with No Name, occupation unknown
  • To earn the good graces of their new hosts, Aetha did a super cool acrobatic flip when prompted by Rodrigo, thinking her a circus performer. She landed on Chi Chi, Rodrigo's tiger, and flourished with total victory, gaining much favor by the group. Azriel produced an admission card to The Wilted Thicket. Turian, intrigued by his new guests, asked about our heroes' loyalty to the city. Saying they had none, Turian invited them to perform the initiation: steal a book found locked in in the Union council's office.

    Meeting Those in Power

On arriving into the government office, they came face to face with the man himself, Stockton Araby, who was speaking to the magistrate at the front counter. They overheard Stockton talking about incident reports of armatures that had gone haywire. Agatha the magistrate said she'd have to report them to the council. Stockton, pushing around his influence, urged her to bury them instead. Unable to maneuver, she was forced into agreement.   Azriel used the invisibility scroll and turned invisible, sneaking into the back office. Inside the room, he was ambushed yet again by The Mysterious Demon Woman, who finally introduced her as Stryxia. She invited him to join the 8th layer of hell as her champion. The offer was declined and Stryxia left, assuring Azriel that she'd be back to check on him periodically and measure his power gain, hoping she, or her minions, could change his mind in the future.   Azriel stole three books: Turian's banned book, the city rent records, and the banned book from the Dragonsfire scrolls. His invisibility scroll broke while sneaking out, but his party was able to create a distract him and get him out in time.   Aetha spoke to Stockton Araby himself, clad in his unstoppable combat armature. He revealed that he had just squashed a bandit uprising near Squarehill Keep, east of the city of Union. He also revealed that through his business partners he was on the verge of discovering a new kind of metal, adamantium, only found under the surface of Tol' Tivikh, the gnomish kingdom where ice and fire met underground. His combat suit was one of the first prototypes made from this newly found metal. Aeða goaded him for as much information as she could before gracefully bowing out to reunite with her team.   The heroes, now safe outside the council building, met a bum who told them that if they had a curiously small banana, they use it with a hex circle to reveal one of the wizards four. His cryptic message ended just as he passed out unconscious from his drink.

    The Tavern of Thieves

Aetha returned to the group back at Turin's home. They gave the book only for Turin to reveal that it was empty. They had passed initiation and were granted access to The Wilted Thicket, even when Turin wasn't home.   Our heroes asked about the fey flower spirit that had consumed Gervil earlier. Tanya told the heroes the story of Percival, the druid that had tried to manipulate the fairy circle found underneath his home, but was punished by the arrival of a fey flower spirit, Phia, who destroyed him and his home, and continued growing in its place for 5 years.   Rodrigo invited Aetha to develop her animal taming ability, by befriending 4 angry animals in combat to gain a new ability.   Tanya saw the black spot in Torentous, and said that he needed to consult with a 'medium' to discern a solution for extracting or destroying the necrotic mark. She invited him to raise her sister Katya from the dead, who was buried in the Willoughby cemetery. Katya could help him understand what to do next.   The heros entered The Wilted Thicket and were greeted by Emrys, Azriel's ex girlfriend. She was happy to see him and invited them all to stay the night. 1 room for the four adventurers, 1 for Azriel. They also got a free bar tab to use for the night! Neat!   Will our heroes find who they're looking for within the hidden thieves tavern underground the city? Will the city guard catch them before they have the chance? Find out what happens on our next episode of Dream Thieves!
