Undertow
This cavernous district was originally dug out by invading Underdark forces during the events of The Maelstrom in Kythorn of 1494 DR. The tunnels descending into the Underdark are sealed, at least for now, and the district now serves as a subterranean home for the denizens of Driftriver which prefer the cool and dark environment. The district has quickly become crowded with small, tightly packed buildings occupied by dwarves, kobolds, goblins, and even the occasional minotaur or naga. The Undertow is a relatively cheap place to live due to the inherent dangers of the district, being adjacent to the Gnarled Grotto. The Undertow is also a major throughway for the people of New Halimar to enter the city proper, as it is the only directly accessible part of the city for the submerged district through a series of underwater caves.
The deepest slopes of Undertow give way to a flooded system of tunnels connected to the water table which change daily as they operate on an inexplicable tidal system. Every night the water rises, seemingly infused with the magic of the river Ashaba, and every morning the waters recede leaving behind a completely changed series of caverns and tunnels. The Gnarled Grotto often requires B.A.S.E. agents be dispatched to handle dangerous creatures brought in by these tides of magic, as the whirling reforming waters seem to trigger magical disturbances similar to a mistrise on a much smaller scale.
The Undergate
Originally the area of the breach into Driftriver by the forces of the Underdark, this hillside fortress surrounds the cavernous opening of Undertow into the Arch. Ostensibly a line of defense in case of problems crawling out of the Gnarled Grotto the Undergate is sometimes seen as a monument to the as-of-yet resolved tensions between the new districts of the city and the old, particularly to the merfolk of New Halimar.
The Sea Caves
Undertow is accessible through a number of submerged tunnels and caves along the eastern cliffs adjacent to New Halimar. The two districts share little in common in terms of lifestyle and culture, but the two districts do what they can to ensure the caves remain safe, clear and accessible.
