    Backstory

Thunder was born in a large merchant ship, traveling the void from planet to planet. His parents were both part of the enormous crew required to haul cargo and pilot, repair, and maintain the ship.   As a result of this, Thunder spent their early life roaming the gargantuan vessel’s corridors. By age ten, they knew everything about the ship – every room, every nook and cranny of it. In turn, everybody knew Thunder. They were almost like the ship’s mascot, popping up all over the vessel to chit-chat, observe and explore.   Of course, Thunder was also expected to work. Since they were a child, most tasks were still off limits to them. Even so, nobody was allowed to simply remain on the ship and do nothing – and so, Thunder became the ship’s courier, carrying letters and items all over the vessel’s length. Since most important messages were sent via the ship’s intercom, this meant Thunder usually carried odds and ends and unimportant messages. Moreover, Thunder also cleaned, being sent to tidy up small spaces where only a child could fit comfortably.   From a very young age, Thunder exhibited a talent for fixing stuff up. As they cleaned up and down a ship, they would often take off a panel and poke at the cabling inside, somehow recognizing imperfections almost on instinct. By the time Thunder approached their teenage years, they were known as a fixer-upper on a ship. Even then, it was whispered that this wasn’t just Thunder being good with their hands – some of the stuff they repaired had thwarted the attempts of the ship’s best mechanics, sometimes generations of them.   During a long journey hauling supplies to a distant colony, the merchant ship came under attack. Although it was outfitted to defend against such threats, the pirates proved way too much for the ship’s defenders – soon, they had made their way inside the ship. It was then that Thunder came face to face with some of them. It was the most stressful time in their life, and something sparked inside of them in that moment. The power that had always lurked inside them was unleashed, and Thunder crackled with the force of a dozen lightning bolts.   The pirates had expected an easy job. When Thunder manifested their powers, their resolve broke. Although they tried to regroup, the tide of battle had turned. Eventually, they were in retreat.   Although the people of the ship were grateful to Thunder, they also knew that they couldn’t stay in the vessel. They had showed psychic abilities and, as such, they had to be trained. After delivering the cargo to the colony, the ship dropped Thunder off in one of the government’s training camps.   Life was grueling for Thunder, but, even so, he enjoyed himself. Life had been grueling in the merchant ship too, and small comforts like the sun’s light on their face were enough to keep them happy. During their time at the facility, they managed to master their skills, becoming particularly powerful in electrokinesis. Most peculiarly, using this power also produced loud music, something that Thunder came to enjoy quite quickly.
