Narren Striker

That was then ...
Narren Striker was born forty-five years ago, on a planet called Valens. Valens was an agricultural world – essentially, every inch of the planet had been given over to crop cultivation and extensive terraforming had been done to ensure that everything would flourish.
Life on an agricultural world was tougher than it might first seem. Although there was a certain bucolic element to it all, hard work was needed from every single inhabitant to ensure a good harvest. Although the people of Valens had the assistance of robots, they still had to oversee them, as well as do many actions manually.
Narren’s father had died from a heart attack only a couple of months before he was born. As such, he only knew his mother, a hard-working woman who worked in the medical flora section of Valens.
Narren’s mother had to fulfill very specific work quotas, and so had to be out of the house many hours of the day. As a result of this, she ended up carrying Narren around with her – the young Narren grew up seeing and learning about medical plants. Later on, when he began to attend school and learn things, his mother began to teach him about how to synthesize these plants into advanced medicine with the help of various machines.
It was around this time that Narren experienced a formative event that would affect his life’s trajectory. Until roughly age ten, all he knew about his father was that the man had died. Eventually though, his mother decided to tell him the details.
Upon learning that his father had died because of a heart attack, Narren was confused and shocked. According to what he’d learned at school, it was almost trivial to deal with such things in today’s age, with all the modern medicine that abounded.
That was true, to an extent. If somebody was brought to a medical facility quickly enough, there was truly nothing that could go wrong. Moreover, there were specific implants that one could get that could also stabilize things. However, Narren’s father had no such implants, and he’d been out in the fields when the heart attack had happened.
This was shocking to hear for Narren. How could such an advanced society let someone die because they didn’t have an implant?
It was around this time that Narren resolved to do something about this. At first, his mother thought such a declaration a childish one, the kind a young kid would say and then forget about the next week.
But Narren proved to be single-mindedly focused. He excelled at school, particularly in biology and technological subjects. When he realized his mother did not have the money to send him to university on another planet, he studied even harder and applied for various scholarships.
In the end, Narren was successful. He was accepted into a prestigious university, where he spent the next six years of his life getting a degree in biotech engineering.
During his time in university, Narren also began to realize something. The world was – perhaps fundamentally – broken. When he talked about his dream of helping people, of coming up with the kind of biotech invention that would have helped his father live if he had it, people didn’t seem particularly interested. Or, rather, they were, but only about the financial aspect of it all.
Narren hoped this would change once he left university. Having received a research grant, Narren founded PenTex BioTech, the company he hoped he’d lead into a brave new world.
