Desmariel
Love's story is told in the stars.
Desmariel came into being with the first stars, watching from perches empyreal as the planes unfolded. She observed with interest as life came into being, mingling, clashing and loving. She watched the creation of stars, learning their movements and patterns, mapping constellations and understanding the power of the stellar flows. Through understanding and insight, Desmariel learnt the ability to harness the power of the stars and weave magic. For countless ages, she observed mortals and painted their stories in the stars.
Thierrin was an anomaly to The Witch, his star bright and influential. She watched as Taranis, a Lord of the Sky, sent crashing down to earth her stellar siblings. When he approached her, a dark and thundering cumulus, he commanded her to descend, and to use her magic to ensnare Thierrin and return him to the heavens where he rightfully belonged. Taranis trusted in her diligence and cunning, and disregarded her curiosity. This proved to be a fatal error on Taranis' behalf.
When Desmariel found Thierrin, he was talking with a tribe of Skaden tribesmen, who had laid down their weapons and shields to share their stories. Never before had Desmariel paid any attention to the stories of mortals. Their lives were ephemeral, of scarce interest to someone who had been sentinel to the creation of worlds. She learned, though, cloaked in mist, that those these lives were ephemeral, they were filled with struggle. Thierrin's soft, compassionate heart was a rarity among the harsh Skaden lands, but the air of camaraderie was palpable to The Witch. Looking into the bank of fog which hid her, Thierrin invited her to join, and to share her own story.
Desmariel thenceforth travelled with Thierrin, collecting stories of mortals and the world they had come to possess. With Eloa, she wove these stories into verse, and infused words with the power to draw upon the power of the stars. With Moshiel and Urdel, she came to understand the latent magic in nature and patterns. All this knowledge she passed on freely to her children.
Description
Desmariel is depicted as a woman with dark hair and clothing, always wearing a hat. Her eyes are a bright green that was said to glow in the darkness. In works of visual art, she is often shown holding a quill and wand, the keepsakes that are now property of the ducal house of Demaine. She is often shown with sheep and stars.Faith
Desmariel's clergy wear robes of indigo chased with silver thread. Her grand temple is in Mijoux, the capital of Demaine. Desmarieline clerics chronicle stories large and small, factual and fictitious, and distill their wisdom. A Desmarieline traditionally serves as the Royal Chronicler. Desmariel's religious order is named the Chapter of the Quill, and maintain the most complete library of biographies and tales across Ereb, save perhaps for the Karthani archives.Desmariel's holy symbol is an an indigo four-pointed star, its points arranged in imitation of a compass. The blue symbolisess the all-encompassing sky and sea that play host to the stars as window and mirror. The four points symbolise the four cardinal directions and possibility. As a whole, the symbol represents the superficial simplicity of history and fact, the multiplicity of perspectives that both may be viewed from. It represents the search for complete, holistic truth, and the futility of undertaking the task alone.
