Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (a.k.a. Le Général de Gaulle)
Charles de Gaulle was a French army officer and statesman who led the French Resistance against Nazi Germany in World War II and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 in order to reestablish democracy in France. In 1958, he came out of retirement when appointed Prime Minister and then President of the Fifth Republic, which he founded. His presidency was marked by a foreign policy that sought to restore France's standing as a great power. De Gaulle's leadership style was characterized by his strong-willed determination and belief in France's destiny.
