Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (a.k.a. Il Divino)

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. His oeuvre includes some of the most famous works in the art world: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and the statue of David and the Pietà. Michelangelo was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was alive. He was often called Il Divino, and his contemporaries admired his terribilità—his ability to instill a sense of awe.
