The sea creatures living in the Abyss in the Eastern Sea are absolutely terrifying monsters that often devastate the eastern coast, and they make seafaring entirely impossible there. Perfectly logically, people living on the coast have decided to make them the heroes of children's tales.

Protagonists

Depicted sea creatures vary from Estate to Estate, but two recurring ones are a giant squid called Mulmunie and a sea serpent named Sessinie. Both of them have impressive camouflage abilities, deadly poison, and a sharp intellect. In stories, they often change colours depending on their mood, and their magic is shown as being so strong that it appears as lightning arcs around them, visible to everyone even without magical sensibility.
And then, Sessinie makes himself look all red like the coral, and after nobody could find him anywhere!

Stories

Common tales throughout the empire depict how the two creatures have been locked in a deadly struggle together since the dawn of time. A stupid quarrel had them trouble an eldritch horror at the bottom of the Abyss, resulting in them getting banned from there. Since then, they have been roaming through the oceans, always quarrelling together and getting in each other's ways.   Favourite stories have them steal prey right under the other's nose or impeding some of their special plans—plans that often consist of laying waste to a particular human town. Thus, it often results in one of the creatures playing the role of an unwitting hero and saving humans.

And then Lulie the stingray comes, and she is protecting the baby octopi like she agreed with Mulmunie. But then, Sessinie appears out of nowhere, and bam! He snatches one of the babies!

Epic battle between the giant feline Luna and the snake Sessinie!
1) While Sessinie was dozing on a beach in shallow water, the traitorous giant feline Luna, ally of Mulmunie, sneaks on him to eat him!
2) A fierce battle ensues!
3) Reinforcement arrives! Hiss the snake comes to the rescue of Sessinie!
4) Hiss the snake is the victim of terrible torture!
5) The traitorous feline is vanquished and has to flee in disgrace! Hurray for Sessinie!

Reception

Some stuck-up people are attempting to create a controversy, saying that this will all make children underestimate the danger of the sea creatures, but everyone else understands it is all in good fun and does not listen to them.   All children have a favourite between Mulmunie and Sessenie, and asking someone whether they are for the squid of the serpent is a common way for children to get acquainted and establish friendship.
I don't like Jean, he's an idiot and he thinks Sessinie is weak! I'm not inviting him to my party!

Parents also love these tales, as they use them to terrify their children into behaving and getting into their bed and its protective wards in time for their curfew, or Mulmunie and Sessenie will come to eat any limb that sticks out from the bedsheets.
— Stop sticking your feet out like that! Do you want them to get eaten by Sessinie?
— Stupid mama, Sessinie is my friend, he's not going to eat me!
— What about Mulmunie, then? They're going to come and stick their suckers on your feet and melt them into their mouth!
— Noooo!

Goodies

Depending on the parents' financial means, most children will have some toys in the effigies of Mulmunie and Sessinie, from rough wooden figures, picture books, colouring books, or even stuffed toys.
Look at my amazing boots! If you bother me, I'll stomp on you and Sessinie is going to eat you!

In several towns, a special festival is organised so as to give an occasion for the children to fly sea monster kites and use their levitation magic to make them have epic battles in the sky.

You did great! What a fun article.   I am going to have to call them her Sessinie boots from now on, see if the name catches on.

Thanks, and thanks again for the photos! She's lucky to get such cute boots, I would have loves having some when I was younger (or even now, if only I had the courage to wear them outside XD )

We went to buy her sneakers, but she saw the boots and refused to try on anything else until we told her she could have them. Haha! But they're a size too big, and nice durable snow boots, so she'll have them for a while. (She already destroyed the sneakers completely). Was a good investment.

Aaaawwwww!   That's my main takeaway, I am not sure for which of the two I would root. Probably Mulmunie.

I really enjoy how you have a sense of human behaviour -- both how children act, and how adults act around children -- and you have incorporated your usual excellent social commentary so subtly into the article. Also, the inclusion of the photos are epic, and really give me a sense of a living, breathing world and its traditions. Well done!
