Gwendor, Lord's Redoubt

"A cityscape dominated by high spires and towering aqueducts, the highest echelons of Gwendor are renowned for their architectural prowess- each building serving as testament to some achievement. Further out however, a different story is told. The floodplains of the Twelvellian Basin harbour thousands of squat houses or stone and brick, with the high spires of the city replaced by smoke plumes of peat fires and furnace flames. Further still are the farmsteads and villages of the outer ring whose yield feeds the sprawl."
Gwendor is the largest city in Estanon, and by some margin, with roughly 300,000 registered citizens living within its boundaries as of the last census. Many more live without documentation or recognition in the slums outside the city walls. Nevertheless, Gwendor is a thriving centre of commerce, wisdom and prestige of every kind. The city is comprised mostly of low stone buildings reaching no more than two stories high, but within the Giritath the architecture is dramatically different. The streets become shining clean, the buildings become white marble and glistening stone. Nowhere can there be found a building under 60ft tall within the Giritath. The city centre is thus a hub for all things official, be it foreign affairs, government business or matters for his Lordship. The professional districts- or quarters- are hotbeds of craftsmanship in almost every area of art and skill, but Gwendor especially attracts master-builders and masons who maintain the great structures of the Quarter-Politikk, and the meandering aqua-works that serve the city.

  • Gwendor, Lords Redoubt
"A diplomats paradise, but step one foot beyond the Giritath and the paradise becomes that of a merchant or thief." - Part of an address made by an envoy of the Channel Outposts to their superiors.    Gwendor's reputation beyond its borders is mostly dominated by the power its diplomats wield with seeming ease. Envoys stream to and from its territories, with its army staying on the west side of the Lodge Mountains. Nevertheless, the white and blue togas of Gwendor carry beneath them the swords of every soldier in service of his Lordship, of whom diplomats are considered an extension of. Dishonouring or harming an ambassador of his Lordship is punishable by lashing, or worse if done within the Giritath.
