From an Immortal

Interview with Anonymous

What is immortality actually like?
You sit across from a shadowed figure whose name you did not receive when you'd asked for it. You'd gestured to the scars across their throat when asked how you'd known. It took some convincing, but they promised an interview, provided they remain anonymous. You'd agreed. It's not as if they'd given you much to identify them by anyways.   Keep your voice down, unless you'd like to get us both killed. They glance towards the door, and you wonder if they might try to run. They do not.   Do you need convincing that chasing immortality only reflects ignorance and poor judgement, or are you just a curious passer-by?

nv, nv, it ultimately doesn't matter.

Immortality is.... not what many think it is. They believe it to be the end of death itself, but they couldn't be more wrong. Immortality is not the end of death, merely the eternal cycle of it. And the mortals will do their damnedest to wipe us out if they can. They think we are abnormal, and maybe we are, but I do not know an immortal that willingly became one. As far as any of us know, only the Mothers have such powers. Maybe the Queen as well, though why she would want to keep anyone out of Gehenna is beyond my knowledge.   If the higher-ups anywhere except for the Shadi Order, Silver Sands, Hell's Breach, or the Arborlich finds out which of us is the immortal... well, ironically enough, the penalty for supposedly dabbling in such magicks is death.   If you're lucky, you'll lose your head. Sure, there's a chance to come back from that, but if no one stitches your head back to your shoulders, than you won't be anytime soon. It's about the closest to a true "death" that we can achieve. Though by most standards, it isn't even that. Our souls do not leave our bodies. They cannot.   If your executioner is feeling particularly cruel, you may be tied to a weight and tossed into the ocean to drown. Except you resurrect from that... except you cannot escape, so you drown again, and again and again. Is there any ending to such torment? I do not wish to find out, though I believe the Queen of the Damned laughs either way.   They sigh.   Aside from those few places-- places that believe we are agents of the Mothers-- being immortal is an instant guilty verdict for practicing or soliciting Dark Magic. They give a roll of their eyes.    You know how it goes-- because clearly there is no way to fuse an Anchor with Light Magic. Light Magic could never be capable of such atrocities such as condemning someone to an endless cycle of death!   In case it was missed, I was being very sarcastic there.   There is a long silence as they look at you from beneath their hood. You presume they are wearing a mask, else you'd be able to see their face.    Tell me, weary traveler: do you believe we are monsters? Is it morbid curiosity or a selfish desire that led to you tracking me down and finding me? It is an impressive enough feat as it is, but to also know what I am... that is persistence I can admire.
