Time & Calendars

Era-Based Timekeeping

Time in Estya flows differently than on Earth, with different months, days, a slightly shorter year, and the manipulation of time being just a few differences.

Year

Years in Estya are shorter than on Earth, totaling 360 days in each year. With 9 months and 40 days each month, Estyans have also adapted to the wildly varying climates and seasons, with winter being non-existent in regions such as the Silver Sands, and summer a single 40-degree day on the fringes of the continent such as Disciple's Drop.
The Estyan Calendar has five days a week, with each day corresponding to a different aspect of Magic in the world. The days of the week consist of Shadow-Day, Mother-Day, Father-Day, Light-Day, and Harmony, corresponding to Dark Magic, Mothers of Magic, Fathers of Magic, Light Magic, and Harmony Magic, respectively. Shadow-Day has been replaced with Chaos-Day in much of Estya.

Era

Era-based timekeeping in Etysa dates back to the mid-Laohis Era, but it was first adopted by the Disciple Order in the beginnings of the Analar Era. Adopted throughout the Disciple Order, it saw widespread use after the Disciples Fracture   and the Folatia Empire rose from its ashes. The Folatia Empire proceeded to continue use of the era calendar, and as they began conquering most of Estya, its adoption began spreading.

Era Progression

Estyan Timekeeping dates back to the beginnings of the Laohis Era, with the earliest discovered magical signature serving as a starting point for Estya's approximately two thousand year history. The Analar Era began when the Disciple Order was first founded, as twelve people are simultaneously resurrected and seek to spread the words of their saviors, the Mothers of Magic.   After the Analar Era, came the Folatia Era, which spans the over 350 years since the Disciples Fracture  and the Folatia Empire rose to power. However, the death of Valan Eromin at the Battle of Yna saw the Empire quickly collapse, splintering and forming the Ebonblade and Darkforge. This schism ushered in a new era: the Menarn Era, as declared by the newly-influential Shadi Order.   The Menarn Era lasted over 250 years as the war continued to rage onward, and ended when the first demons were spotted in Estya, and the Shadi Order once again declared a new Era. The Denema Era, or "Time of Demons ", stretched for only 25 years, but to Estyans, the twenty-five years were long and brutal as most Estyans were killed in the invasion. With the Demons driven out, the shattered remnants of the Shadi Order, the only resemblance of former society still standing, declared a new era for reconstruction; "The Time of Light", or Onalar Era.   Once the majority of the ruins left behind had been rebuilt and societies began to reform, the fighters credited with saving Estya from the demons, dubbed the Heroes of Denema, were granted the authority to usher in a new Era. They chose to declare the Jalanit Era, or "Time of Magic" in honor of the fallen, and honor the friend who gave her life to give them a chance. The Jalanit Era was named with her native tongue Silvin ("Galanid Era" in Orbin) and would mark the last of the sorcerers in Estya, before they slowly declined and perished.
