After a couple more days of travel and licking their wounds from the fight with the black dragon, the party finally reached the gates of Hammerforge. As they approached, however, a young, burley dwarf with a nasty attitude stopped them and attempted to turn them away with vulgar remarks, declaring that their kind was unwelcome. As the party attempted to convince the dwarf to let them pass, smoke and fire could be seen in the distance and the dwarves stationed around the gates took to their battle stations as an angry black dragon came swooping down to attack the stronghold's walls.
After much conflict, the dragon fled the battlefield. As the combatants cheered at their hard won victory, the King of Hammerforge, Thormyl Frostbeard (who at some point entered the fray) approached the party and thanked them for their help in the conflict. Realizing the adventurers' potential, he requested that the party follow him to the throne room where a discussion was already underway to deal with a "problem" that the dwarves have been dealing with for some time. The king lead the party to the throne room as they talked.
